Yoko Ono to unveil major retrospective ‘The Learning Garden of Freedom’ ————————————————————
Multimedia artist, musician and peace activist Yoko Ono returns to Kaunas with ‘Learning Garden of Freedom (kultura.kaunas.lt/en/events/view/yoko-ono-instaliacija-ex-it/6774 ) ’, her major retrospective exhibition. Following up from her first exhibition ‘Ex It’, which opened in Kaunas in January, ‘Learning Garden of Freedom’ will launch on September 9th and allow visitors to explore more of her creations and find undiscovered traces of her life’s mysterious works.
FLUXUS festival marks 60 years of Europe’s love affair with the ‘anti-art’ movement ————————————————————
This year marks the 60th anniversary since Europe’s first festival celebrating Fluxus, the ‘anti-art’ movement established by Kaunas-born avant-garde artist George Maciunas. The Fluxus festival 2022 (kultura.kaunas.lt/en/events/view/fluxus-festivalis-2022/4659) (9-11 September) celebrates this movement with a range of exhibitions and performances, ending with a suitably huge celebration filled with dramatic costumes and street performances.
“UKRAINE! UNMUTED” – a safe haven for contemporary Ukrainian art ————————————————————
After the creative-cultural space ‘CulturEUkraine’ opened earlier this year, Kaunas2022 will now host a triennial of contemporary art – Ukrainian Cross-Section 2022. The exhibition will be held in the former Kaunas Central Post Office with the theme ‘UKRAINE! UNMUTED (kaunas2022.eu/en/2022/07/29/ukraine-unmuted-contemporary-ukrainian-art-in-kaunas-european-capital-of-culture-2022/ ) ’. Speakers from Ukraine and abroad have been invited to discuss colonialism, reinterpretation of Ukrainian artistic phenomenon, as well as personal stories.
Explore Lithuanian identity with the World Litvak Culture Forum ————————————————————
The World Litvak Culture Forum (kaunas2022.eu/en/litvakforum/ ) is undoubtedly one of the most important events on the Kaunas 2022 programme. Litvaks from across the world will be returning to Kaunas on September 29th and 30th to discuss what it means to be Lithuanian, as well as exploring how art, culture and its history have shaped the place it is today – and importantly, what the future will hold.
Modernist Architecture-inspired film to premiere in Kaunas with the conference: “Modernism for the Future. Interpretations” ————————————————————
Initiated in 2019 after awaiting its UNESCO recognition, Kaunas 2022 team decided to create a movie about its modernist architecture. Together with the European Capital of Culture 2022 programme Modernism for the future and Aideen Barry, ‘Folds/Pleats (kultura.kaunas.lt/en/events/view/klostes-filmo-apie-kauno-modernizma-premjera/5718) ’ was created. The movie with its unusual plot where residents of Kaunas become characters in the film, is finally premiering on 21st of September following a conference on “Modernism for the Future. Learn more about the known and unknown history of Kaunas through a mix of exhibitions, performances and forums.
4. Experience “Out of Darkness” by Jenny Kagan Initially created for British audiences, Jenny Kagan’s “Out of Darkness” brings the story of her parents’ struggle for survival and escape from Kaunas during WWII to the city where it all began. Discover how her parents married in the ghetto and became two of only 500 Kaunas Jews to survive the war.
