Robin Frijns and Nico Müller didn’t manage to score points on the debut of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship in Brazil. Although ABT CUPRA once again proved its upward trend in São Paulo and fought for places in the midfield in all sessions of the event, a countable success was missing: Robin Frijns finished 14th on his comeback after a two-month break, while his teammate Nico Müller retired after a collision through no fault of his own. Next stop: the team’s home race in Berlin.
“We’re taking home the positive points,” says team principal Thomas Biermaier. “We made the right steps to be closer to the top in free practice and qualifying. If we continue this way consistently, we will soon see the corresponding results in the race as well.” The to-do list for the coming weeks remains long. “It’s good to have Robin back on board. We will now work intensively together on and off the track to present ourselves even stronger at our home races.”
Already in the free practice sessions in São Paulo, Nico Müller in particular showed with lap times in the top ten that the newly formed team has caught up with the midfield. In qualifying, the Swiss driver finished in 13th place – the best grid position so far this season. Müller fought for the first points until the middle of the race, when he had to retire after a collision. “We had a sniff at the points again, but it didn’t work out yet,” said Nico Müller. “It was quite chaotic on the track at times. For a long time I managed to stay out of any trouble, but then unfortunately it did get me. But we know we can keep up.”
For Robin Frijns, the first event after recovering from a hand injury was a challenge. After finishing 20th in qualifying, the Dutchman bravely fought his way through the field, staying out of most of the scuffles and finishing 14th. “It’s good to be back in the Formula E paddock and to see that everything is fine again with my hand,” said Robin Frijns. “We were hoping for more in the race and will now work hard over the next few weeks to get even closer.”
In four weeks’ time (22 and 23 April), one of the season highlights is coming up: Formula E will start on Saturday and Sunday at the former Tempelhof Airport in Berlin. For ABT and its partners, the weekend will be a mega event with numerous activities around the racetrack, many guests and the famous, unique atmosphere.
