TEMPERATURE RISING IN HERMOSILLO

Key points:

115 vehicles were cleared to start the ninth edition of the Sonora Rally following the routine scrutineering inside the renovated former textile factory in Hermosillo’s Parque La Ruina. There will be 27 FIA crews and 34 FIM riders in the race, along with 54 entries in the National class.
In the FIA category, the main battle will be between the leader of the championship, Sébastien Loeb (Bahrain Raid Xtreme — 101 points), and his closest rival, Nasser Al Attiyah (Toyota Gazoo Racing — 85 pts), only 16 points apart.
In the FIM category, Toby Price (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) tops the RallyGP standings with 46 points, but Adrien Van Beveren (Monster Energy Honda) is hot on his heels with 42. Four riders have already got a taste of the Sonora Rally before, including Ricky Brabec, a factory HRC rider with four wins under his belt.
Tomorrow afternoon, the 10-kilometer prologue will kick off on a dragster track in true American style —it’s all about the show—, with temperatures expected to hit 36 °C. The ten fastest competitors will get to pick their starting order for Monday’s first stage, a loop in the north of Hermosillo.d

FIA: LOEB CROWNED SIX TIMES IN MEXICO

The world championship leader, Sébastien Loeb, has bounced back from a missed flight connection and problems with the shipping of spare parts for the BRX team from the port of Los Angeles and is ready to get to grips with his first Sonora Rally. The Frenchman tasted victory in Mexico six times in his WRC career —a good omen for the Prodrive team, which is fielding a total of four Hunters: Loeb‘s (red) Red Bull, Guerlain Chicherit‘s matte black “post-apocalyptic” GCK Motorsport, and two black-and-yellow vehicles recently bought by the X Rally Motorsport team of the Brazilian brothers Cristian and Marcos Baumgart. These Sertões regulars are not yet in the championship, but they have put their names down for the rest of the calendar and will be there to lend a hand to the two champions on the track. In the Toyota camp, numbers 2, 4 and 5 in the provisional standings are ready to rumble. Nasser Al Attiyah is back after his roll-over in Abu Dhabi in a bid to erase his 16-point deficit to Loeb. With Martin Prokop and his Ford, third in the standings after two events, out of the picture, Toyota and Prodrive are both eyeing this spot on the provisional podium. The recent winner of the Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge, Yazeed Al Rajhi, is in pole position with 63 points. His teammate Jan Cruz Yacopini is neck and neck with Guerlain Chicherit, tied with 49 points apiece. Sebastián Halpern, behind the wheel of one of the two Mini JCWs of the X-raid team, is trailing with 43 points. There will be 9 T1+ cars on the start line tomorrow.

In T3, 10 lightweight prototypes registered in the W2RC passed the routine scrutineering, including the three Americans of the Red Bull Off-Road Junior Team USA, who are currently leading the championship. Seth Quintero, whose name reveals his Mexican roots, does not hide his hunger for another win after his ADDC triumph. He is perched at the summit of the category with 127 points, with his teammates Austin Jones (122 points) and Mitch Guthrie Junior (81 points) breathing down his neck. The old guard of “Chaleco” López (55 points) and Cristina Gutiérrez (52 points) have been a cut below the young guns so far, but the Red Bull team dominates the standings. Mattias Ekström gave the South Racing outfit a pleasant surprise by announcing a short while ago that he would line up for the Sonora Rally. As in the ADDC, the Swedish champion will be behind the wheel of a Can-Am in T3 to try and secure the victory that slipped from his grasp in the Emirates. In T4, the 3 SSV entrants will be on the start line tomorrow. Rokas Baciuška (Red Bull Can-Am Factory) should feel more at ease than his T3 teammates. The Lithuanian has 134 points to the 44 points of his main threat in the standings, the Japanese Shinsuke Umeda (Polaris Extrem Plus).

All the FIA crews will be making their debut in the race.

FIM: 4, THE MAGIC NUMBER BEFORE THE START

Among the FIM riders in the championship, 27 will be at the start of the prologue tomorrow. 4 of the 15 RallyGP entrants already have a history with the Sonora Rally. Ricky Brabec (Monster Energy Honda) is the event record holder with 4 wins to his name (2017 and 2019 through 2021). His three-time runner-up, Skyler Howes (Husqvarna Factory Racing), has won twice here (2018 and 2022) and does not beat around the bush about his prospects. He says he feels “like Sunderland in Abu Dhabi: home”. Nacho Cornejo (Monster Energy Honda) finished third in 2021, but that edition was all about dunes, unlike the route awaiting the field of the ninth edition. Mason Klein (BAS World KTM Racing) has participated twice, with his top performance being fifth in 2021. Brabec, Howes and Klein should be able to capitalize on their familiarity with the terrain. 4 is also the number of points separating the leader, Toby Price (46 points), and his closest rival, Adrien Van Beveren (42 points), as well as the difference between VBA and Kevin Benavides (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing — 38 points). The Argentinian, who broke his femur on February 22, just before the ADDC, is back in action exactly 2 months later! His supersonic comeback has left his peers in awe. The Dakar champion already spent three days of testing on his bike in the US with his team last week. While he is not likely to be at 100% this week, his presence allows the Austrian teams KTM, Husqvarna and GasGas to field a full complement for the first time since the start of the last Dakar. The reigning world champion, Sam Sunderland (Red Bull GasGas Factory Racing), is back after sitting out the ADDC due to an ankle injury. “SunderSam” announced that he is firing on all cylinders, unlike his teammate “Chucky” Sanders, who should be back to his usual self by August, say his doctors. The same goes for Matthias Walkner (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) who rates his form at 80% following his wrist injury in the Dakar. Counting Mason Klein, the Austrian posse has 8 riders on the RallyGP start list. Honda, with 4 factory riders, will seek to negate their numerical superiority. A fifth bike was provided to Joan Barreda in the Dakar. In the Sonora Rally, the extra HRC is going to the 27-year-old Tosha Schareina, who finished his second Dakar in fifteenth place last January. The Spaniard did not sign up for the championship before the start of the season, so he will not be scoring any points, but he will be able to assist the CRFs on the track and, who knows, perhaps even pick up the torch from the reds. As in the ADDC, Hero MotoSports have selected Ross Branch and Sebastian Bühler to participate in the third round.

In Rally2, the 7 entrants will be on the start line. Romain Dumontier (HT Rally Raid Husqvarna Racing — 38 points), the winner of the category in the Dakar, third in the standings after skipping the ADDC, is back in the game. He will again cross swords with the new leader, Paolo Lucci, (BAS World KTM Racing — 50 points), the victor of the second round. Bradley Cox (BAS World KTM Racing) is also making his comeback after his crash in the Dakar. Neither the Saffa nor Duust Diverse Racing’s Konrad Dąbrowski have opened their accounts yet. The Pole’s teammate, Jacob Argubright (15 points), has a shot at inching closer to the podium in the absence of four higher-ranked entrants. In Rally3, the 3 first-timers are set to discover the W2RC. Among the 2 quads expected tomorrow, the championship leader, Laisvydas Kancius (AG Dakar School — 44 points), holds a comfortable lead over Rodolfo Guillioli. The Guatemalan, seventh with 13 points to his name, also has a clear run to the provisional podium in the absence of the five riders ahead of him in the standings.

PROLOGUE: THE SHOW MUST GO ON

The scrutineering came to a close this evening in Parque La Ruina, a former industrial site that used to house a textile factory and now stands as a memento of Sonora’s historical economy. Renovated with a local brewery at its core, the scrutineering venue becomes the gathering point for the competitors and the organization as soon as temperatures start to dip. The paddock boasts food trucks, a skate park, and even a minigolf course under the shade of a retired plane! The W2RC competitors have started to get a feel for the Sonora Rally and its chill vibes, which until now were mainly aimed at amateurs. Now, the race is poised to become “Pro-Am”, the usual term in American motor sports for events in which the amateurs mingle with the pros. Tomorrow, the 10-kilometer prologue will start on the Cerro Colorado race track, where dragsters usually blast off in front of the stands and the spectators. Pre-race strategies, usually top secret, are crystal-clear here because one of the challenges of the first stage is already known to the regulars: visibility. In the motorbike race, the dust expected in the first stage among the cacti and the fast tracks on the ranches in the north of Hermosillo leaves no room for doubt: starting ahead in stage 1 is a must to avoid as much as possible having to overtake competitors on Monday. All riders should therefore start tomorrow’s prologue in motocross mode for the bikes and pedal to the metal for the cars. More than enough to spice up the show, to the delight of the sonorenses, who will hear for the first time the sound of the official FIM 450s and FIA T1+ of the W2RC.

Tras las habituales verificaciones en la antigua fábrica textil del Parque La Ruina en Hermosillo, 115 vehículos fueron autorizados a tomar la salida de la 9ª edición del Sonora Rally. Al lado de los 54 vehículos inscritos en Nacional, 22 equipos FIA y 27 pilotos FIM estarán en la carrera.
En FIA, la diferencia de 16 puntos entre el líder del campeonato Sébastien Loeb (Bahrain Raid Xtreme – 101 pts) y su rival más directo Nasser Al Attiyah (Toyota Gazoo Racing – 85 pts) será el principal tema de la carrera.
En FIM, 4 puntos separan al líder de la categoría RallyGP Toby Price (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) – 46 pts) de Adrien Van Beveren (Monster Energy Honda – 42 pts). 4 pilotos tienen experiencia en el Sonora Rally, entre ellos el piloto oficial de Honda, Ricky Brabec con 4 victorias en su palmarés.
Mañana por la tarde, el prólogo de 10 kilómetros, en el que se esperan 36°C, comenzará en una pista de drag en el más puro estilo americano: el espectáculo. Los diez pilotos más rápidos elegirán su orden de salida para la primera etapa del lunes, que será un bucle en el norte de Hermosillo.r

FIA: LOEB YA HA GANADO SEIS VECES EN MÉXICO

A pesar de perderse una conexión de avión, y de que BRX sigue esperando unas piezas de repuesto viniendo del puerto de Los Ángeles, Sébastien Loeb, el líder del campeonato del mundo, está listo para disputar su primer Sonora Rally. El francés ya ha triunfado seis veces en México, durante su carrera en el WRC. Esto es un buen augurio para el equipo Prodrive, que cuenta con un total de cuatro Hunter. El Red Bull rojo de Loeb, el GCK Motorsport negro mate “post apocalíptico” de Guerlain Chicherit, más dos vehículos amarillos y negros recientemente adquiridos por el equipo X Rally Motorsport de los hermanos brasileños Cristian y Marcos Baumgart. Estos habituales de Sertoes aún no participan en el campeonato, pero disputarán toda la parte final del calendario y podrán ayudar a los dos campeones en la pista. En Toyota, los números 2, 4 y 5 de la clasificación están listos. Nasser Al Attiyah regresa tras su accidente en Abu Dabi para intentar recortar la distancia de 16 puntos que le separa de Loeb. En ausencia del Ford de Martin Prokop, tercero en la clasificación tras dos carreras, Toyota y el equipo Prodrive aspiran a ese puesto en el podio. Con 63 puntos, el reciente ganador del Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge, Yazeed Al Rajhi, es el mejor situado de los candidatos. Su compañero de equipo Jan Cruz Yacopini está luchando con Guerlain Chicherit, empatado a 49 puntos. Sébastian Halpern, al volante de uno de los dos Mini JCW del equipo X-raid, les sigue con 43 puntos. 9 T1+ tomarán la salida mañana.

En T3, 10 prototipos ligeros inscritos en el W2RC han pasado las verificaciones. Entre ellos, los tres estadounidenses del Red Bull Off-Road Junior Team USA que lideran el campeonato. Seth Quintero, cuyo nombre revela sus orígenes mexicanos, no oculta su deseo de ganar de nuevo tras el ADDC. Lidera la categoría con 127 puntos, seguido de su compañero de equipo Austin Jones (122 pts) y Mitch Guthrie Junior (81 pts). “Chaleco” López (55 pts) y Cristina Guttiérez (52 pts), se ven de momento superados por la generación más joven, pero el equipo Red Bull se mantiene en cabeza. Mattias Ekström dio una agradable sorpresa al equipo South Racing al anunciar hace poco que estaría en la salida del Sonora Rally. Al igual que en el ADDC, el campeón sueco volverá a estar al volante de un Can-Am en la categoría T3, esta vez para intentar llevarse la victoria que estuvo a su alcance en los Emiratos. En T4, los 3 SSV inscritos tomarán la salida mañana. Rokas Baciuska (Red Bull Can-Am Factory) debería sentirse más cómodo que sus compañeros de equipo de la categoría T3. Con 134 puntos, su principal amenaza de la carrera es el japonés Shinsuke Umeda (Polaris Extrem Plus), que tiene 44 puntos en el campeonato.

FIM: 4, EL NÚMERO CLAVE ANTES DE LA SALIDA

Entre los competidores FIM inscritos en el campeonato, 27 pilotos saldrán mañana en el prólogo. Entre los 15 pilotos RallyGP, 4 ya tienen una historia con el Sonora Rally. Ricky Brabec (Monster Energy Honda) es el recordman de la carrera con 4 victorias en su palmarés (2017, 2019-20-21). Tres veces segundo, Skyler Howes (Husqvarna Factory Racing) ha ganado en 2018 y 2022. Reconoce que está aquí “como Sunderland en Abu Dabi: en casa”. “Nacho” Cornejo (Monster Energy Honda) quedó tercero en 2021, pero en una edición 100% dunas con un perfil diferente al que espera a los competidores en esa 9ª edición. Mason Klein (BAS World KTM Racing) ha competido en dos ocasiones, con un mejor resultado de 5º en 2021. Esta experiencia debería beneficiar a Brabec, Howes y Klein. 4 sigue siendo el número de puntos que separa al líder Toby Price (46 pts) de su perseguidor Adrien Van Beveren (42 pts), pero también el que separa al VBA de Kevin Benavides (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing – 38 pts). El argentino, víctima de una fractura de fémur el 22 de febrero antes del ADDC, ¡está de vuelta 2 meses más tarde! Un regreso supersónico que impresiona a sus rivales. El ganador del Dakar ya pasó tres días probando su moto en Estados Unidos con su equipo la semana pasada. No se espera que esté al 100% esta semana, pero permite a los equipos austriacos KTM, Husqvarna y GasGas de estar completos, lo que no ocurrió desde el último Dakar. Ausente en el ADDC tras una lesión en el tobillo, Sam Sunderland (Red Bull GasGas Factory Racing), campeón del mundo 2022, está de vuelta. “Sundersam” anunció que está en forma. No es aún el caso de su compañero de equipo “Chucky” Sanders, que debería estarlo en agosto según sus médicos. Lo mismo ocurre con Matthias Walkner (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) que se estima al 80% de su forma tras lesionarse la muñeca en el Dakar. Con Mason Klein, el grupo austriaco cuenta con 8 pilotos en RallyGP. Una supremacía numérica a la que Honda, con 4 pilotos oficiales, intenta oponerse. En el Dakar, una quinta moto estaba a disposición de Joan Barreda. En el Sonora Rally, será para Tosha Schareina, de 27 años y con dos Dakar, incluido un 15º puesto el pasado mes de enero. El español, que no estaba inscrito en el campeonato antes del inicio de la temporada, no puntuará, pero podrá ayudar a los del HRC y quizás convertirse en la nueva estrella de los rojos. En Hero Motosports, al igual que en el ADDC, Ross Branch y Sebastian Bühler fueron seleccionados para competir.

En Rally2, los 7 pilotos inscritos estarán en la salida. Reaparece Romain Dumontier (HT Rally Raid Husqvarna Racing – 38 pts), ganador de la categoría en el Dakar y 3º en la clasificación del mundial tras su ausencia en el ADDC. Se enfrentará al nuevo líder Paolo Lucci (BAS World KTM Racing – 50 pts), vencedor de la segunda carrera. Bradley Cox (BAS World KTM Racing) también vuelve a la pista tras su caída en el Dakar. Aún no ha sumado ningún punto. En Duust Diverse Racing, Konrad Dabrowski se encuentra en la misma posición. Su compañero de equipo Jacob Argubright (15 pts) puede esperar volver a acercarse al podio en ausencia de cuatro de sus rivales en la clasificación provisional. En Rally3, los 3 novatos descubrirán el W2RC. Entre los 2 quads que se esperan mañana, el líder del campeonato Laisvydas Kancius (AG Dakar School – 44 pts) tiene una buena ventaja sobre Rodolfo Guillioli. 7º con 13 puntos, el guatemalteco puede esperar volver al podio del campeonato en ausencia de sus 5 predecesores en la clasificación.

PRÓLOGO: SHOW MUST GO ON

Esta tarde se han completado las verificaciones en el Parque La Ruina. Un antiguo sitio industrial que albergaba originalmente una fábrica textil, la economía histórica de Sonora. Rehabilitada en torno a una fábrica de cerveza local, la sede de las verificaciones se convierte en el punto de encuentro de los competidores y de la organización. En el paddock están unos food trucks, una pista de skate e incluso un minigolf a la sombra de un avión retirado. Los competidores del W2RC han empezado a meterse en la salsa del Sonora Rally. La salsa de una caravana “chill”, que hasta ahora ha sido principalmente un evento amateur, y que vivirá su primer año “pro-am”, como se suele llamar a la coexistencia de competidores profesionales y amateurs en los deportes de motor estadounidenses. Mañana, la salida del prólogo de 10 kilómetros se dará en la pista del Autódromo Cerro Colorado, donde los dragsters suelen despegar en medio de las gradas y los espectadores. Las estrategias previas a la carrera, habitualmente confidenciales, parecen aquí bastante claras. Porque uno de los temas de la primera etapa ya es conocido por los habituales de la carrera y será la visibilidad. Entre los motoristas, el polvo que se espera en la primera etapa en medio de los cactus y las pistas rápidas de los ranchos del norte de Hermosillo no deja lugar a dudas: será necesario salir en cabeza en la etapa 1 para evitar tener que adelantar a los competidores el lunes. Por lo tanto, todos los pilotos deberían empezar el prólogo en modo motocross para los motoristas, y “flat out” en los coches. Esto debería subir aún más el nivel del espectáculo, para el gran placer de los espectadores que descubrirán por primera vez el sonido de las 450 FIM oficiales y de los T1+ FIA del W2RC.
