A NEW STEP TOWARDS THE FUTURE

Key points:

· The Dakar Rally organisers have invited French and Spanish competitors to Château-Lastours to mark the opening of registrations and announce the broad outlines of the 46th edition, which will include new competition and technological aspects. The rally’s fifth edition in Saudi Arabia will be held from 5 to 19 January 2024, starting in the thousand-yearold city of AlUla, crossing the country in the direction of the Empty Quarter and finishing in Yanbu on the shores of the Red Sea.

· “The challenge will be just as daunting as last January“, warns race director David Castera, who promises the competitors massive stretches of dunes where navigation difficulties will accompany the technical challenges of crossing them.

· A new stage format has also been created: on the “48H CHRONO”, there will be a time limit for stopping (4 pm) before setting off again the next day (7 am) to complete the route.

· As part of the Dakar Future programme, the Mission 1000 operation offers constructors an opportunity to test vehicles with innovative technologies on Dakar terrain: over a hundred kilometres per day, with their performance evaluated in a giant laboratory.

ALULA CAMP: RENDEZ-VOUS WITH HISTORY

The Dakar competitors discovered the wonders of AlUla in the first edition of the rally in Saudi Arabia in 2020. However, this time around, they will have the opportunity to immerse themselves even further in the atmosphere of the thousand-year-old archaeological sites: the principle of the start camp, which was a tremendous success among the competitors in its coastal version, has now been extended to the desert, with the bivouac located in the vicinity of the majestic temples built by the Nabataeans. Drawing inspiration from buildings that have stood the test of time, this is the perfect way to get into adventure and discovery mode before tackling the thousands of kilometres of the route.

1 PROLOGUE, 12 STAGES, 14 DAYS OF RACING

Following a demanding edition that revealed the competitors’ capacity for resistance, the tone of the Dakar 2024 will be just as respectful of their expectations in terms of a challenge. The route, which will cover an equivalent distance of 5, 000 kilometres, of special stages continues the exploration of Saudi territory, with 60% of all-new sections. A total of nine bivouacs will be set up on a large swathe running west-east, crisscrossing the route in both directions to a final finish in Yanbu, on the shores of the Red Sea.

48H CHRONO: ENGINES CUT AT THE CANNON BLAST

This is a new stage format, contested over two days with the constraints of a marathon stage, although competitors are permitted to help each other during the evening. But this time, there will be no choice of canteen or repair companions, as the drivers and crews will be spread out over eight different bivouacs. When the clocks strike 4 pm, all vehicles will be required to stop at the next bivouac they come across. With no connection and therefore no visibility of their rivals’ performances, the competitors will camp and set off again at 7 am the following day to complete the remaining section of the route. The tally will be counted after around 600 kilometres of special stage.

EMPTY QUARTER: TWO SPECIAL DAYS

The immense desert of the Empty Quarter will be the venue for the all-new “48H CHRONO”, with a special format that surpasses the time limit imposed on the first sequence. The terrain lends itself particularly well to two separate courses, one for motorbikes and quads and the other for cars and trucks. Therefore, the top FIA teams will not benefit from the tracks left by the two-wheelers and will have to navigate based on their talent. The system of ‘bonuses’ awarded to motorbike stage openers introduced in the previous edition will be, exceptionally, employed.

DAKAR CLASSIC, ACT 4

The reference to the era of the pioneers, anchored in the Dakar history led to the creation of the Dakar Classic for the 2021 edition. Vehicles from the 1980s and 1990s were able to return to the Dakar tracks in a regularity challenge that drew 23 cars and trucks for the inauguration of the concept. From now on, the format will be limited to around 100 crews, all delighted to share their passion for historic vehicles and their restoration. Replicas of René Metge’s and Jacky Ickx’s Porsche 911s, Ari Vatanen’s 205 Peugeot and Jan De Rooy’s double-cab DAF truck all enjoy a new lease on life on the Dakar Classic.

DAKAR FUTURE MISSION 1000: THE ENERGIES OF TOMORROW

· While the TU category continues to progress and biofuels gain ground, the most innovative technologies in the field of decarbonisation are being called upon to show their worth in a parallel challenge. Each day, the vehicles taking part will set off on a route of around 100 kilometres that will not be the same as the official route but will pose similar difficulties.

· In an experimental mode, only the energy sources that consume the least fuel are included in Mission 1000: hydrogen, 100% electric or hybrid engines with a minimal amount of biofuel on board.

· No winners, no losers. Although Mission 1000 participants will eventually be entered into a real competition. Initially, they will be invited to participate in a full-scale test, allowing carmakers to gather as much information as possible. However, their performance in terms of technical reliability, energy consumption and carbon footprint will be assessed by a panel of experts.

· Around ten vehicles – motorbikes, cars and trucks – are expected to participate in this project supported by the FIA and FIM. They will meet every evening in a designated area of the bivouac that will be energy self-sufficient but open to all to encourage as much discussion as possible on the subject.

UN PASO MÁS HACIA EL FUTURO

Ø Los organizadores del Dakar han invitado a los corredores franceses y españoles en Château de Lastours, en el departamento galo del Aude, para celebrar la apertura de las inscripciones y desvelar las grandes líneas que caracterizarán la 46ª edición, con novedades en el plano deportivo y tecnológico.

Ø El quinto capítulo de la epopeya saudí del rally se desarrollará del 5 al 19 de enero de 2024: el pistoletazo de salida será en la ciudad milenaria de AlUla, para después atravesar el país en dirección al Empty Quarter y, por último, regresar hasta Yanbu a orillas del mar Rojo.

Ø «El reto será tan grandioso como el pasado mes de enero», avisa el director David Castera, quien promete a los corredores grandes tramos de dunas donde a las dificultades técnicas para franquearlas se sumarán los escollos en materia de navegación.

Ø Se ha ideado también un nuevo formato de etapa: en la « 48H CHRONO» se incluye una parada obligatoria (a las 16.00) para volver a partir al día siguiente (a las 7.00) y completar el recorrido.

Ø En el marco del programa Dakar Future, la operación Misión 1000 brinda a los fabricantes la posibilidad de probar sus vehículos con tecnología innovadora en terreno dakariano: a lo largo de un centenar de kilómetros en cada etapa, podrán evaluar sus prestaciones en un laboratorio gigantesco al aire libre.

ALULA CAMP: UNA CITA CON LA HISTORIA

Los pilotos del Dakar conocieron las maravillas de AlUla en la primera edición organizada en Arabia Saudí en 2020. En esta ocasión, podrán impregnarse desde el principio del ambiente que se respira en sus yacimientos arqueológicos milenarios: tras haber disfrutado de la versión costera del campamento de salida, se opta ahora por la dimensión del desierto al situar el vivac en la zona misma de los magníficos templos construidos por los nabateos. Inspirarse en edificios con siglos de historia es el método perfecto para activar el modo aventura y exploración, con la vista puesta en los miles de kilómetros del recorrido.

1 PRŌLOGO 12 ETAPAS, 14 DÍAS DE CARRERA

Tras una edición exigente que puso a prueba la capacidad de resistencia de los competidores, la tónica del Dakar 2024 será igual de respetuosa con sus expectativas para el reto de la competición. El trazado, que recorre una distancia equivalente a 5000 kilómetros, sigue adelante con la exploración del territorio saudí, con un 60 % de zonas inéditas en las especiales cronometradas. Se instalarán en total nueve vivacs en una franja muy ancha que discurrirá de oeste a este, mientras que la ruta cruzará en ambas direcciones para llegar a la meta final en Yanbu, a orillas del mar Rojo.

48H CHRONO: TOQUE DE QUEDA PARA LOS MOTORES

Se trata de una etapa con formato nuevo que se disputa durante dos días con las limitaciones propias de una etapa maratón, si bien los competidores podrán ayudarse entre sí por la tarde. Lo nuevo es que en esta ocasión no podrán elegir a sus compañeros de comedor ni de taller, ya que se repartirá a pilotos y tripulaciones por ocho vivacs diferentes. Cuando el reloj marque las 16.00, todos los vehículos estarán obligados a detenerse en el siguiente campamento al que lleguen. Sin conexión y sin saber el resultado de sus rivales, los pilotos acamparán y retomarán la ruta a las 7.00 del día siguiente para completar el resto del recorrido. Los movimientos en la clasificación solamente se sabrán tras unos 600 kilómetros de especial.

EMPTY QUARTER: DOS DÍAS APARTE

El inmenso desierto del Empty Quarter será el escenario en el que se disputará la nueva etapa « 48H CHRONO », con características especiales que van más allá de la hora tope impuesta en la primera jornada. El terreno se presta en particular a la confección de dos recorridos por separado: uno para motos y quads, otro para autos y camiones. Por lo tanto, los equipos punteros de la FIA no se beneficiarán de las trazadas de los pilotos sobre dos ruedas y dependerán en exclusiva de su talento para la navegación. Se les aplicará de modo excepcional el mismo sistema de la última edición de «bonificaciones» para las motos que abren pista.

DAKAR CLASSIC, CAPÍTULO 4

La evocación de la era de los pioneros, bien latente en el universo del Dakar, motivó la creación del Dakar Classic con ocasión de la edición de 2021. Los vehículos de las décadas de 1980 y 1990 pudieron volver a vérselas con las pistas del Dakar en una competición de regularidad que congregó a 23 autos y camiones en su edición inaugural. A partir de ahora, el formato se limitará a un centenar de tripulantes felices de compartir su pasión por los vehículos históricos y su restauración. Las réplicas de los Porsche 911 de René Metge o Jacky Ickx, del Peugeot 205 de Ari Vatanen o del camión DAF con doble cabina de Jan de Rooy reciben un nuevo soplo de vida en el Dakar Classic.

DAKAR FUTURE Y MISIÓN 1000: LAS ENERGÍAS DEL MAÑANA

· Mientras la categoría TU continúa su progresión y los biocombustibles siguen ganando terreno, las tecnologías más innovadoras en materia de descarbonización están llamadas a participar en un desafío paralelo. Día tras día, los vehículos participantes acometerán un recorrido de un centenar de kilómetros que, si bien será distinto al trazado oficial, planteará dificultades similares.

· A título experimental, la Misión 1000 incluye únicamente las energías de menor consumo: motores de hidrógeno, 100 % eléctricos o incluso híbridos con una cantidad mínima de biocombustible a bordo.

· Nadie gana y nadie pierde. Pese a que el objetivo final sea inscribirse en una competición real, a los participantes de la Misión 1000 se les invita en un primer momento a un banco de pruebas a escala real en la naturaleza para que los fabricantes puedan recabar la máxima información posible. No obstante, su rendimiento en cuanto a fiabilidad técnica, consumo energético y huella de carbono será evaluado por un jurado de expertos.

· Se espera la participación de unos diez vehículos, entre motos, autos y camiones, en este proyecto respaldado por la FIA y la FIM. Se reunirán todas las noches en un espacio específico del vivac con plena autonomía en el plano energético, pero abierto a todos para propiciar el debate sobre el tema.
