He is back: Lucas di Grassi returns to ABT CUPRA in Formula E

The most successful Formula E driver is coming home: from the new season, which starts in Mexico in mid-January, Lucas di Grassi will once again be competing for ABT – the team with which he experienced his greatest triumphs and most emotional moments. Together with the Swiss Nico Müller, the Brazilian forms the new driver pairing in the ABT CUPRA team, which was only founded last year. After its comeback with many challenges this year, the team wants to take the next steps in the new season.

“We are happy that we have brought Lucas back to ABT – he was and is a good friend of our whole team and is one of Formula E’s greats of the past ten years,” says Hans-Jürgen Abt, CEO of the ABT Group. Ten years ago, ABT was the first German team to join the championship and returned as a private team in 2023 after a one-year break. “We know about the great challenge of battling against international competition as a small customer team,” says Thomas Biermaier, ABT CEO and Team Principal. “That’s why experience, technical know-how and full passion for the joint project count all the more for us – with Lucas, we have the perfect man on board for the future.”

The 39-year-old Brazilian’s Formula E CV leaves few questions open: Lucas di Grassi has won the most trophies of all Formula E drivers (40), the most victories (13) and the most fastest laps (12). He is one of only two drivers to have been on the podium at least once in every season. He won the drivers’ championship in the third season (2016/2017) and the team championship a year later. After seven years with the ABT team, he first competed for Venturi Racing and this year for Mahindra Racing, whose powertrain ABT CUPRA sources as a customer team.

“It just feels great to be back with ABT,” says Lucas di Grassi. “Not only did I win two titles with this team, but I also have endless memories with all the people who work there with so much passion. I couldn’t be more excited to return after two years and I’m really looking forward to working together. Together, we will give our all to get back, step by step, the results that the whole team deserves.”

Lucas di Grassi will compete alongside Nico Müller for the first time for his new old team at the official ABB FIA Formula E World Championship tests in Valencia. All drivers of the championship will meet in Spain from 23 to 27 October to prepare for the season.

Company profile of ABT Sportsline

As the world’s largest specialist for automotive aftermarket and performance parts for the Audi, VW, Seat, CUPRA and Skoda brands, the name ABT Sportsline is world-renowned. The product line ranges from more engine power to body kits, over suspensions and interior design, to an extensive collection of alloy wheels. However, the Bavaria-based company, which has its roots in 1896, stands for much more. Today, several attractive subsidiaries with a total of 210 employees join forces under the umbrella of ABT SE. In doing so, they elegantly combine innovation and tradition. When it comes to drivetrain technology, the German company always has its finger on the pulse of the times: through ABT e-Line GmbH, the areas of electric and alternative mobility are covered as a further strong pillar of the company. And of course ABT Sportsline also stands for top-level motorsport, as it always has. This is demonstrated by the success story in the DTM, which continues right up to the present day, as well as the current involvement in the forward-looking electric racing series Extreme E and Formula E.
