Key points: – With just eight days to go to the 24th Rallye du Maroc, which takes place from October 12-18, the entry list is impressive: 247 vehicles are expected to go through scrutineering at the Agadir Stadium, including 101 cars, 10 trucks and 136 motorcycles and quads. – Among the FIA vehicles, there are 34 T1s, 2 T2s, 37 T3s, 19 T4s, 10 T5s and 9 Open Maroc Telecom SSVs. ON TRACK Beyond the figures, which alone testify to the ever-growing enthusiasm of the international rally-raid community for the Rallye du Maroc, deciphering the list of entrants is already sport!
It’s official! Among the official teams, the Rallye du Maroc sees the return of the three leading teams and the arrival of a major new manufacturer. Four car brands will be officially represented in Morocco by 7 professional crews. Audi announced at the presentation of its rally-raid programme three years ago that the Dakar 2024 would be its final event. This underlines the importance of next week’s reunion of Stéphane Peterhansel, Carlos Sainz and Mattias Ekstrom, who have not all been entered together since January 2023. Absent from the fourth round of the W2RC, the Bahrain Raid Xtreme team will be back in the championship with Sébastien Loeb as well as Orlando Terranova. The Argentinian, who injured his back on the Dakar, will be back in the driver’s seat of the Hunter for the first time. ‘Orly‘ finished second on the 2022 Rallye du Maroc. A return for some, a fresh start for others. For Nani Roma (see Me and the Rallye du Maroc), it will be a bit of both. A comeback, since the Catalan hasn’t competed in a rally-raid since 2022. A new start for Ford and the M-Sport team, until now associated with WRC. The 2014 Dakar winner will be making his first official rally-raid appearance at the wheel of the Ranger T1+ after his test on the Baja Aragon this summer. Ford has chosen the Rallye du Maroc to make its rally-raid debut. For Toyota Gazoo Racing, the Japanese brand’s official team will be led by Nasser Al Attiyah. For the six-time winner of the Rallye du Maroc, this could be his last appearance at the wheel of the Toyota. His association with TGR will finish at the end of the W2RC final. Toyota Gazoo Racing is due to announce its line-up for the 2024 W2RC just after the Rallye du Maroc.
Privateers, but talented Among the 27 private T1s, no fewer than 6 Hilux pick-ups will be under Jean-Marc Fortin’s tents in Agadir. The official TGR plus six privateers! And not just any privateers either, but rather an armada of talent led by Yazeed Al Rajhi and Juan Cruz Yacopini, the closest to Nasser Al Attiyah in the W2RC standings. A trio which has already enabled the brand to renew its Manufacturers’ World Championship title since round 4 of the FIA World Rally-Raid Championship. Guillaume de Mévius will also be at the wheel of a Hilux T1+. After his involvement in T3 in the OT3s and the creation of his GRally team, the son of Grégoire de Mévius has now entered the big league. The major surprise comes from Guerlain Chicherit, the Rallye du Maroc title holder, who has also signed up with Overdrive Racing. The Frenchman is changing cars during the season! After his winning debut in Morocco in 2022 with a Prodrive Hunter, Chicherit took the start of the first three rounds of this season’s W2RC at the wheel of the British car, which he has now abandoned in favour of the Japanese brand. Simon Vitse, who finished fourth in the first week of the Dakar on two consecutive days, turned heads in his MD Rally Optimus buggy. The Frenchman will also be there to get back into the racing groove. Mathieu Serradori (SRT) will be making his return to W2RC. Another Rallye du Maroc regular, fifth in 2022, Martin Prokop will be back with ‘Shrek’, his Ford Raptor. After their remarkable entry in round 3 of the W2RC this season, Brazilian brothers Marcos and Cristian Baumgart will be back in the two Prodrive Hunters that they have acquired.
The T3 gold rush! In T3, the largest category in the cars (37 T3s vs 34 T1s plus 2 T2s), Mitch Guthrie, Austin Jones and Seth Quintero, the holder of the 2022 Moroccan crown, are neck and neck in the overall W2RC standings after four races. The level of competition between the three Americans in the Red Bull Off-Road Junior Team USA by BFG will be at its peak. And the ideal challenge for young Rokas Baciuska. The Red Bull Can-Am T4 official, who has already won a W2RC title this season, has decided to enter the final race in a T3. The whole Goczal family, including Eryk, the youngest winner in the history of the Dakar, has also chosen to come and rub shoulders with the T3 frontrunners.
A little softness in a rough world In T5, ten trucks are expected, and not the least. Dakar winner Janus Van Kasteren from De Rooy and runner-up Martin Macik, the boss of MM Technology, will be battling it out for the W2RC title alongside the Riwald and Fesh Fesh teams. Newcomer to the category, Anja Van Loon will be making her debut in a De Rooy truck after her SSV apprenticeship on the 2023 Dakar. Erik Van Loon’s wife will form an all-female Dutch team with Marije Van Ettekhoven and Floor Maten.
HRC out in force Among the 16 RallyGP bikes, the 6 brands involved in the premier class are expected to be present. Missing from the line-up are Kevin Benavides (KTM) and Daniel Sanders (GasGas), both still convalescing. All three Sherco riders have been entered. At Hero Motosports, the three officials are also on the list, and it will be the return of Joaquim Rodrigues, absent all season after his crash on the Dakar. Over at KTM, Toby Price will be supported by Matthias Walkner. Sam Sunderland and Luciano Benavides will represent GasGas and Husqvarna respectively. Honda, for its part, will be fielding no less than six riders! Five official riders plus Tosha Schareina. The 27-year-old Spaniard is the recent winner of the Desafío Ruta 40! Five officials, that’s one more than since the start of the season. Skyler Howes, winner of the 2022 Rallye du Maroc, has left Husqvarna to join the Monster Energy Honda team. It’s the transfer of the year among motorcycle racers who will make his debut in red in Agadir. The Japanese factory is also set to unveil a new machine, reserved for one or more of its officials.
Kove, Fantic, Kini, Meoni In Rally2, among the 97 expected riders, W2RC regulars Romain Dumontier, Paolo Lucci, Bradley Cox and Michael Docherty will be joined by Tobias Ebster, nephew of Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge winner Klaus Kinigadner. In a sign of the times and the interest aroused by the category, two manufacturers will be introducing new riders. Chinese brand Kove will be out in force with four pilots. Xavier Flick will make his debut alongside the other Frenchman already present on the Dakar, Neels Théric and the two Chinese riders Sunier Sunier and Fang Xiangliang. Following on from the development work carried out by the legendary Franco Picco, Italian manufacturer Fantic Racing will be bringing along Italian Tommaso Montanari, Englishwoman Jane Daniels and French hopeful Jérémy Miroir. The son of Alfie Cox was already in Rally2, but next week the son of another KTM legend will be attracting a lot of attention. And that will be his aim, as he will be on a mission to complete a project initiated by his father. Fabrizio Meoni’s son, Gioele Meoni, will be in Morocco before setting off on the Dakar. 13 Rally3s, on enduro bikes, who will be discovering the discipline without breaking the bank, will also be taking part. For the few W2RC protagonists, it will no longer be a question of discovery but of the final after three rounds. In the quad category, 10 riders are entered, including Alexandre Giroud, winner of the 2023 Dakar and Manuel Andujar, his designated rival, winner of the 2021 Dakar and the 2022 Rally du Maroc. The top three finishers in the overall W2RC standings will also be lining up for their finale.
Africa Rallye Team All competitors of Moroccan nationality benefit from a special entry fee in order to encourage ‘local’ talent. For the members of the Africa Rallye Team 2023, supported by the race’s major partners, the entry fee and the hire of safety equipment are fully covered. They all benefited from training during the selection phase, which took place in Merzouga at the beginning of the summer, an experience that is priceless! 5 motorcycle entrants and one SSV crew will be making their debut in their respective categories. Moroccan Souleymane Addahri and Senegalese Yves Cheikh Jacquemain and Mamadou Bocoum in Rally3, Christian Aboub and Guillaume Borne in Rally2, and the Moroccan team of Sharif Guessous and Sofia Skiredj in SSV.
RADIO BIVOUAC As it does every year, the Rallye du Maroc and its major partners are working together to take concrete action for the benefit of all Moroccans, to ensure that the Rallye du Maroc is a rally for the whole nation. In the immediate aftermath of the earthquake, 300 kg of medicine has already been sent by the organisation to the Agadir University Hospital, which is responsible for distributing it to the stricken villages in the neighbouring region of Taroudant. All competitors are currently being asked to take part in a major collection of material, so that they too can play their part in the chain of solidarity being set up across the Kingdom. Five villages identified by an association in conjunction with the authorities will receive direct support from the Rallye du Maroc. Receptive to the values conveyed by sport, the younger generation will be at the centre of the action in Zagora, the stopover town for this edition. A sports complex at Zagora secondary school will be inaugurated as the rally passes through, in the presence of basketball player Ronny Turiaf, who will be on the bounce of the ball thrown by Tony Parker a few days earlier. The former NBA star is expected to be at the bivouac in Agadir on October 13, the day of the prologue. And it could well be that ‘TeePee‘ will be challenging the rally-raid stars to some hoops!
STAT OF THE WEEK: 50,000 50,000 people are expected to flock to the Place Al Amal in Agadir on the evening of Friday 13 October for the Rallye du Maroc Festival. Once again this year, the programme for this mega-concert offered by the Rallye du Maroc and its major partners will feature a number of international artists: French Montana, Dystinct, SDM, Douzy, Manal, Toofan, DJ Aymoune and DJ Ortal are all scheduled to perform. A moment of popular communion that will accompany the capital of Souss Massa in this period of resilience.
ME AND THE RALLYE DU MAROC Nani Roma (M-Sport Ford World Rally) My first Rallye du Maroc… “My first race in Morocco was in 1998 on the Atlas Rally. It was my first year as a KTM factory rider. I had a prototype and everything went well until the penultimate stage when, twenty metres from the finish, the bike cut out and wouldn’t start. I had to push to the finish and took a three-hour penalty. Everything started really well in Morocco but it all ended badly and that was hard because I was leading the race. After that episode, the regulations changed, so at least that was a good thing!” My best Rallye du Maroc… “It wasn’t a victory, but a year in which I finished 2nd, at a time when we were riding the twin-cylinder KTM with Meoni and the gang, and the atmosphere was great. I’ve had some good moments on the Rallye du Maroc, but also a very bad one in 2006 when I lost my co-driver Henry Magne on the last stage when we had an accident with the Mitsubishi.” My last Rallye du Maroc… “Was in 2019 with Borgward, the German-Chinese team with whom we were preparing for the 2020 Dakar. We were discovering a new car. But in general Morocco is a great country with everything: mountains, desert, dunes, big tracks, it’s always a pleasure.”

EN PISTA Más allá de las cifras, que por sí solas atestiguan el entusiasmo cada vez mayor de la comunidad internacional de rally raid por el Rallye du Maroc, ¡descifrar la lista de inscritos ya es algo grande!
¡Es oficial! Entre los equipos oficiales, el Rallye du Maroc marca el regreso a la actividad de los tres equipos líderes y la llegada de un nuevo fabricante. Cuatro marcas de automóviles estarán representadas oficialmente en Marruecos por 7 equipos profesionales. Audi había anunciado durante la presentación de su programa de rally-raid hace tres años que el Dakar 2024 sería su fecha límite. Esto demuestra la importancia del encuentro de la próxima semana entre Stéphane Peterhansel, Carlos Sainz y Mattias Ekstrom, que no han participado en una carrera completa de rally-raid desde enero de 2023. Ausente en la cuarta cita del W2RC, el equipo Bahrain Raid Xtreme volverá al campeonato con Sébastien Loeb pero también con Orlando Terranova. En T3, la categoría más numerosa en coches (37 T3 frente a 34 T1 más 2 T2), Mitch Guthrie, Austin Jones y Seth Quintero, ganador en Marruecos en 2022, se encuentran en una posición reñida en la tabla general W2RC después de cuatro fechas. El nivel de competición entre los tres estadounidenses del Red Bull Off-Road Junior Team USA by BFG estará en su apogeo. La situación ideal para el joven Rokas Baciuska. Están inscritos los tres pilotos de Sherco. En Hero Motosports también los tres oficiales están en la lista, y será el regreso de Joaquim Rodrigues, ausente toda la temporada tras su caída en el Dakar. Es el movimiento del año entre los motoristas, y debutará vestido de rojo en Agadir. La fábrica japonesa también debería lanzar una nueva máquina, reservada a uno o varios de sus pilotos.

Todos ellos se beneficiaron de una formación durante la fase de selección que tuvo lugar en Merzouga a principios de verano, ¡una experiencia que no tiene precio! 5 motoristas y un equipo SSV darán sus primeras vueltas en sus respectivas categorías. RADIO VIVAC Como cada año, el Rallye du Maroc y sus principales socios llevan a cabo juntos acciones concretas dirigidas a todos los marroquíes para que el Rallye du Maroc sea el de toda su nación. En respuesta inmediata al terremoto, la organización ya envió 300 kg de medicamentos al hospital universitario de Agadir, que se encargó de su distribución en los pueblos afectados de la vecina región de Taroudant. Actualmente se pide a todos los competidores que participen en una gran colección de bienes para ser también actores de la cadena de solidaridad establecida en todo el Reino. Cinco pueblos identificados por una asociación en contacto con las autoridades recibirán apoyo directo del Rallye du Maroc. Receptivas de los valores que transmite el deporte, las jóvenes generaciones estarán en el centro de la acción que se desarrollará en Zagora, ciudad-etapa de esta edición. Durante la carrera se inaugurará un complejo deportivo dentro del colegio de Zagora con la presencia del jugador de baloncesto Ronny Turiaf, que estará atento al rebote del balón lanzado por Tony Parker unos días antes. De hecho, se espera que la antigua estrella de la NBA acuda al vivac del 13 de octubre en Agadir, el día del prólogo. ¡Y bien podría ser que “TeePee” desafíe a las estrellas del rally-raid con un balón!
LA CIFRA DE LA SEMANA: 50.000 Se esperan 50.000 personas por la tarde del viernes 13 de octubre en Agadir, en la plaza Al Amal, para el Rallye du Maroc Festival. Un año más, la programación de este mega concierto ofrecido por el Rallye du Maroc y sus principales socios reunirá a artistas internacionales: French Montana, Dystinct, SDM, Douzy, Manal, Toofan, DJ Aymoune y DJ Ortal. Un momento de comunión popular que acompañará a la capital de Souss Massa en este momento de resiliencia.
YO Y EL RALLYE DU MAROC Nani Roma (M-Sport Ford World Rally) Mi primer Rallye du Maroc… “Mi primer Rallye du Maroc fue en 1998, en el Rally del Atlas. Fue el primer año que fui oficial de KTM. Tenía un prototipo y todo iba bien hasta la penúltima etapa, donde a veinte metros de la meta la moto se apagó y ya no arrancó. Pasé la línea de meta y recibí una penalización de tres horas. Todo empezó muy bien en Marruecos pero acabó mal y fue duro porque iba liderando de la carrera. Después de este episodio, las reglas cambiaron, ¡al menos eso fue útil!’’ Mi mejor Rallye du Maroc… “No es una victoria, pero un año en el que terminé segundo, en el momento en que estábamos manejando la KTM bicilíndrica con Meoni y el grupo, el ambiente era genial. Tuve buenos momentos en el Rallye du Maroc, pero también muy malos en 2006, cuando perdí a mi copiloto Henry Magne en la última etapa cuando tuvimos un accidente con el Mitsubishi.’’ Mi último Rallye du Maroc… “Fue en 2019 con Borgward, el equipo germano-chino con el que nos preparábamos para el Dakar 2020. Fue así que descubrimos un coche nuevo. Pero en general Marruecos es un gran país, lo tiene todo: montañas, desierto, dunas, grandes pistas, siempre es un placer.’’
DECLARACIÓN David Castera: ‘‘Organizamos con gran emoción la 24ª edición del Rallye du Maroc en el contexto aún actual de dolor nacional tras el terremoto que afectó a una parte de la población marroquí a principios de septiembre. Mis pensamientos están con todas las víctimas y sus familias. El recorrido de esta edición, tal como lo había dibujado, se mantiene en su totalidad. Me gustaría agradecer enormemente a nuestro país anfitrión y a su población por permitirnos organizar esta nueva edición del Rallye du Maroc. Es un orgullo acoger a una caravana tan numerosa y también es una responsabilidad. Respecto a los competidores pero también a los lugares y sus habitantes. Como cada año, haremos todo lo posible para estar a la altura.’’
