ON TRACK Administrative and technical scrutineering began yesterday at the Agadir Stadium. The list of FIM competitors authorised to start the race will be published this evening at 20:00. The list of FIA cars will be published tomorrow morning at 09:30. The organisers have opted for a 19km prologue, the maximum distance permitted by the regulations. This should enable the competitors to optimise their chances of being at the start of stage 1, the day after tomorrow, in positions that are representative of their abilities. A means of improving both safety and fairness. In the motorcycle class, the quads will start the prologue at 09:05. RallyGP will be the last away at 11:22. The top FIA cars will follow at 12:08. At the end of the day, the ten fastest bikes and cars will have the privilege of choosing their starting positions for Stage 1. This first stage will immediately set the tone for the 24th Rallye du Maroc. Commented David Castera: ”I wanted to find a little more of all the ingredients you find in a rally, the ones I like and which are in a way my signature: changes of pace, varied terrain, but also the possibility to get lost. We have achieved such precision today that we have almost made navigation too easy. We’ve tried to backtrack a little to be a little less ‘helpful’. We wanted to toughen up the navigation a bit and we’ll see after the first two stages whether we’ve managed to achieve that goal.” A total of 2,232 km awaits the competitors, including 1,456 km of special stage. These figures have been revised slightly, in particular due to the changes made to the route of stage 2, where the bikes and cars will finally not have different routes through the dunes of the Erg Chegaga. The high temperatures expected over the next few days (see Stat of the Day) have prompted the organisers to adopt a more cautious approach in order to optimise the motorcycle competitors’ safety, who are the first to run the risk of dehydration when crossing the dunes.
RADIO BIVOUAC Guerlain Chicherit and Skyler Howes have at least two things in common (see Quotes): they are the car and bike title holders of the 2022 Rallye du Maroc and they will both be lining up at the start of the prologue aboard new machines. The Frenchman in an Overdrive Racing Hilux, the American on a factory Honda. Last year, Chicherit made an impressive comeback at the wheel of a Prodrive Hunter. Three rally-raids later, Guerlain is making a new start with Toyota. Skyler was signed up by the Husqvarna in 2021, his first factory ride. A year ago in Agadir, the fastest moustache in the desert scored his first victory in a round of the FIM Rally-Raid World Championship. Like Chicherit, Howes didn’t enter the Desafío Ruta 40 and is returning for the W2RC final. For Skyler, it will be a return to his roots. It was on a privateer Honda that he scored his first rally-raid victory at the 2018 Sonora Rally.
STAT OF THE DAY: 40 Peak temperatures of 40°C are expected over the next few days in the regions that the race will cover. 40 is also the number of years that separate the 24th edition of the Rallye du Maroc from the creation of its ancestor, the Rallye de l’Atlas. In 1983, a year after the first Paris-Agadir, the race was renamed the Rallye de l’Atlas. Serge Bacou in the bikes and Pierre Lartigue in the cars scored their first rally-raid victories. Next year, the Rallye du Maroc, created in 2000, will celebrate a quarter of a century with its 25th edition. The saga continues.
W2RC In W2RC, Nasser Al Attiyah has a 51-point lead over Yazeed Al Rajhi, the only driver able to challenge him for the FIA title, with 55 points still up for grabs. Every stage will count and the first leg could already be decisive: the Qatari will be champion if his Saudi runner-up finishes outside the Top 4. Juan Cruz Yacopini must defend the third step of the podium from Sébastien Loeb, 8 points behind. In T3, three drivers from the Red Bull Off-Road Junior Team USA are within touching distance of each other: Mitch Guthrie leads Austin Jones and Seth Quintero by 3 and 9 points respectively. The T5 title is also up for grabs with Janus van Kasteren 11 points ahead of Martin Macik. The suspense is also intact in the FIM class, where Luciano Benavides is under pressure from Toby Price and Adrien van Beveren, 9 and 14 points behind respectively. In the manufacturers’ standings, Honda must defend its top position against KTM, just 6 points behind. In Rally2, Romain Dumontier has the advantage over Paolo Lucci but the Frenchman can’t afford to relax as the Italian is only 13 points behind. Ardit Kurtaj has the edge in Rally3, 20 points ahead of Massimo Camurri. Finally, in the quad category, 16 points separate Laisvydas Kancius and Rodolfo Guillioli ahead of the final.
THE RALLYE DU MAROC AND ME
Pat Kevor (boss of Challenge 75) My first Rallye du Maroc… and my fondest memory: ”It was in 1991 and it was called the Rallye de l’Atlas. It was my first rally. Back then, the teams did their own refuelling and at the first one I couldn’t find my assistance. Inevitably, I ran out of petrol and was taken to the next bivouac in a medical car. The following day, I found a car and a can of petrol and we set off at 6am. We got back the next day at 11 in the evening. It was a real adventure. I stayed with nomads, drank endless cups of tea… but couldn’t find my bike. Finally, I got in touch with a Moroccan who had some connections and the equivalent of 3,000 euros later, my bike turned up.” My 2023 Rallye du Maroc: ”This year, I’m in charge of refuelling the Rally3 Enduro Cup Afriquia bikes and the Open Maroc Telecom SSVs. Of course, I immediately thought of what happened to me 33 years ago! The competitors and the organisation are much more professional, but the atmosphere is still the same. The funny thing is that I have friends who I used to race against who are here today to help their sons. We’ve got lots to talk about !”

EN PISTA Ayer comenzaron los controles administrativos y técnicos en el estadio de Agadir. La lista de pilotos FIM autorizados a tomar la salida se publicará esta tarde a las 20:00. Para los coches FIA, será mañana a las 9:30. La organización optó por un prólogo de 19 km, la distancia máxima autorizada por el reglamento. Debería permitir a los pilotos optimizar sus posibilidades de aparecer pasado mañana, en la salida de la etapa 1, en posiciones representativas de su nivel. Una manera de garantizar la seguridad y la equidad deportiva. En la carrera FIM, los Quads iniciarán el prólogo a partir de las 9:05. Los RallyGP saldrán a las 11:22. Los mejores competidores FIA seguirán a las 12:08. Al final del día, los diez más rápidos en motos y coches tendrán el privilegio de elegir su orden de salida para la etapa 1. Una primera etapa que simbolizará lo que será la 24ª edición del Rallye du Maroc, cuya filosofía ya fue descrita por David Castera: “Quería que encontráramos un poco más de todos los ingredientes del rally, aquellos que me encantan y que son un poco mi firma: los cambios de ritmo, una variedad de pistas, pero también la posibilidad de perderse. Hoy hemos alcanzado una precisión tan grande que casi hemos hecho que la navegación sea demasiado fácil. Intentamos regresar lentamente para ayudar un poco menos. Queríamos hacer la navegación un poco más dura, y veremos en las dos primeras etapas de la carrera si ya lo hemos logrado.” Un total de 2.232 km esperan a los competidores, de los cuales 1.456 km de especial. Cifras ligeramente modificadas, en particular debido a la modificación realizada en el recorrido de la etapa 2, donde las motos y los coches finalmente no tendrán un recorrido especial para cada uno en las dunas del Erg Chegaga. El fuerte calor que se espera para los próximos días (ver El número del día) ha obligado a la organización a ser prudente para preservar la seguridad de los competidores, que se encuentran en primera línea ante el riesgo de deshidratación al cruzar las dunas.
RADIO VIVAC Guerlain Chicherit y Skyler Howes tienen hoy al menos dos cosas en común (ver Declaraciones): son los últimos ganadores FIA y FIM del Rallye du Maroc 2022, y ambos aparecerán al inicio del prólogo con una máquina nueva. El francés al volante de un Hilux Overdrive Racing, el estadounidense con una Honda oficial. El año pasado, Chicherit hizo un brillante regreso al volante de un Hunter Prodrive. Tres rally-raids después, Guerlain es el protagonista de un nuevo comienzo con Toyota. Contratado en 2021 por la fábrica de Husqvarna, Skyler tuvo en este momento su primer puesto oficial. Hace un año, en Agadir, el bigotudo más rápido del desierto consiguió su primera victoria en una carrera del campeonato del mundo FIM de rally-raid. Al igual que Chicherit, Howes no tomó la salida en el Desafío Ruta 40 y regresa para la final del W2RC. Para Skyler, será una vuelta a sus raíces. Obtuvo su primera victoria en rally-raid con una Honda, en el Sonora Rally 2018.

EL RALLYE DU MAROC Y YO
Pat Kevor (jefe de Challenge 75) Mi primer Rallye du Maroc… y mi mejor recuerdo “Fue en 1990, se llamaba Rallye de l’Atlas. Fue mi primer rallty. En ese momento, los equipos hacian sus propios repostajes y al principio no encontré nuestra assistencia. Inevitablemente, me quedé sin gasolina. Regresé al vivac en un coche sanitario. Al día siguiente encontré un coche, un bidón de gasolina y salimos a las 6 de la mañana. Regresamos al día siguiente a las 23. Fue una verdadera aventura. Me quedé con nómadas, bebí muchos tés… pero no encontré mi moto. Al final me puse en contacto con un marroquí que tenía unos contactos, y después de pagar lo que sería 3.000 euros, volvió a aparecer la moto.” Mi Rallye du Maroc 2023… “Este año tengo que repostar las motos del Rally3 Enduro Cup Afriquia y los Open SSV Maroc Telecom en una pick-up con un tanque. ¡Por supuesto, inmediatamente pensé en lo que me pasó hace 33 años! Los competidores y la organización son mucho más profesionales, pero el ambiente sigue siendo el mismo. Lo curioso es que tengo amigos contra los que estaba compitiendo y que ahora están aquí para ayudar a sus hijos. ¡Tenemos mucho que contarnos!”
DECLARACIONES Guerlain Chicherit: “El mercado de fichajes está relativamente abierto desde agosto tras el anuncio de la llegada de Dacia y la salida de Nasser Al Attiyah de Toyota. Me doy la oportunidad de probar un coche que me parece tan eficiente o más que el Prodrive y me abro opciones para 2024 y 2025. Creo que he demostrado durante el último año que tenía mi lugar en un equipo de primer nivel para ganar el Dakar y el W2RC 2024, y Toyota es claramente una de esas opciones.”
Skyler Howes: “Logramos grandes cosas con mi antiguo equipo y siempre los consideraré familia, pero este paso al equipo Monster Energy Honda llega en el momento adecuado para mí y para lo que quiero lograr en el futuro. Cuando comencé siendo un piloto privado en dificultad, me subí a una Honda y soñé con correr algún día para HRC, así que no es exagerado decir que es un sueño hecho realidad.” |
