say, look, Eliza, look, Anne, this is a d, this is an o,
and if you put a g at the end, it says ‘dog’.”

talks, which we choose and use, but, largely,
we are submitted to the inner rhythm in which
the speech unfolds.”

En cualquier lugar fuera (paratext=epitext+peritext)
En cualquier lugar fuera (Anywhere outside) is a project planned around two consecutive exhibitions: Meshworks by Maggie Cardelús and En estas cuatro huellas no caben mis zapatos (these four footprints don’t match my shoes) by Emmanuela Soria Ruiz. With them, it is intended to establish a movement of the artistic work, to approach it as an interpretation or appendix to the written text, using the potentiality of paratext, from two works which, a priori, are very close to the writing process.
In the transtextual relations gathered by the French theorist Gerard Genette in his book Palimpsests, paratext refers to the set of statements that accompany the main text of a work, such as the table of contents, the illustrations or the belly bands. Paratext is the sum of two elements ( which correspond with the two exhibitions of this project): epitext (which mediates the book from outside) and peritext (which mediates the book from inside in a visual way). Both of them display the text in the world and are used to guide the plunging into its reading.
En cualquier lugar fuera presents the exhibition as a paratext, a sort of textual cross-dressing or extension in the gallery of such textual accompaniment of the artist’s work. When changing the spotlight towards the written, what takes place in the exhibition space turns into a sort of extremity of itself, an extension or elongation, which gives it a new texture through the exhibition.

By using a verse from a poem by Rafael Alberti as its title, Emmanuela Soria Ruiz places the project’s working basis in the myth of Io, a nymph who, while transformed into a cow, wrote her story on the ground. With this narrative and by her leg’s movement (the hand), this mythological figure establishes a new relation between words and a walkable reading space, the ground. This relation takes the artist to look for different planes to place the text, leading her to approach the Baroque period, the visual poem, the choreographic score, as well as the garden. She builds pieces from these varied issues while never losing sight of the movement of Io’s leg.
The bond between the text and the place of transit, which the artist finds in Ovid’s work (with its “shapes moved to new bodies”), intertwines here with different texts on which the artist relies (Federico García Lorca, Leonora Carrington, Jean Rousset, Roland Barthes, Anne Carson, Katherine Behar, and so on). All of them end up shaping the “text” that crosses or “lies” visually over the pieces.
While Emmanuela Soria Ruiz’s “peritextual sculptures and drawings” give the text another chance of “edition”, providing it with a new appearance, their transposition to the exhibition space makes it a physically experienceable entity by the “reading bodies” who traverse the gallery.
The “text” with its own density, the original entity which makes paratext and its two variants (epitext and peritext) possible, besides taking shape and feeding from the work, is also present in the booklet which accompanies this exhibition. That booklet is comprised by theoretical and literary references and other written guidances, both in Emmanuela Soria Ruiz’s exhibition and in Meshworks by Maggie Cardelús, the first part of the project with which the epitext was addressed in 2022 and of which there is a piece exhibited here.
