In Austria, job seekers from Eastern Europe often end up in positions far below their level of education. The reasons are found not only in language barriers and complicated processes for the recognition of qualifications, but also in discriminatory social structures. A team of sociologists in Vienna is conducting interviews with migrants to identify the mechanisms underlying the phenomenon of “deskilling”.
