The festivities are well underway. The aisles of the expo are booming. And it is only the opening day! The displays and activities are a huge hit with large crowds. And, of course, world-class sport: the 38th edition of the Roc d’Azur has started with a bang. The promise of memorable moments through to Sunday, on the Fréjus (Var) nature base and on all the tracks to be used for the 38 scheduled events makes the Roc d’Azur special. In the Tri Roc, the biggest event of the day, at the end of the 1,500 m swim, the 20.6 km of mountain biking in the Maures range and the 11 km run at the nature base, 21-year-old Jules Dumas claimed his first triumph on the Tri Roc. “I hope that everyone had as much fun as I did,” says the Montpellier triathlon member, who finished 16th in the Xterra World Championships held last weekend in Italy. “I like the idea of finishing the season with a win. Even more so at the Roc d’Azur. Even though I am the European Championship runner-up and finished second in the U23 world cross-triathlon championship, it is hard to get exposure and find partners. We know that winning the Roc d’Azur has a profound impact at this level.” He finished almost two minutes ahead of title holder Maxime Chané, winner of the world short track series and seventh of the Xterra world championship last Sunday. Luuk Chambeyron, the 20-24-year-old Xterra World Champion, completes the podium. Former professional cyclist Sylvain Chavanel did himself proud, finishing in 35th place. “I came mainly to have a good time with a friend and all the enthusiasts, whether they swim, mountain bike or run,” he explains. “I got into the sport just two years ago. I am a good swimmer, but I don’t take any chances on mountain bike downhill runs. It was very nice, but for me, it was too physical. I have become a diesel.”

In the women’s race, Emma Ducreux, a division 1 triathlete in the Liévin colours, was never troubled, even coming out of the water in the top 5 overall. “I came to the Roc d’Azur when I was a youngster”, she remembers. «It was my first natural triathlon. It was a terrific course, and I had a lot of fun. It’s a small sample, and why not move on to this type of race later? What is certain is that I will be back.” Marie Chipier and Cindy Lüthi accompanied Emma on the podium.

Valentin Remondet and Élodie Python on the Roc Light, the Netherland’s Demiz Hebing and Ema Fouchard on the Mid Roc, Switzerland’s Nicolas Lüthi (four-time world champion masters) and Sabrina Enaux (winner of the Roc d’Azur in 2018) on the Masters Roc, are the other victors of the day.

A battle of titans this Friday on the Ford Roc Marathon

On Friday, the Ford Roc Marathon competitors will set off on a 92.3 km adventure with 2,440 m of positive altitude change. As the last stage of the UCI Mountain Bike Marathon Series season, the event has attracted an incredibly strong field. The 2021 winner, Andreas Seewald, will defend his title. French Marathon Champion Stéphane Tempier (winner of the Roc d’Azur in 2012 and 2018) also wants to wear his tricolour jersey before retiring from the sport. He will face fellow Frenchmen Axel Roudil Cortinat (3rd last year and best Frenchman of the World Marathon Championships in Haderslev, 9th), Hugo Drechou (19th at the Worlds), Lucas Dubau or Mathis Azzaro. The foreign contingent includes Germany’s Simon Schneller and Georg Egger, Colombia’s Leon Hector Paez, Austria’s Alban Lakata, Switzerland’s Urs Hüber and Filippo Colombo, Estonia’s Peter Pruus and of course Italy’s Fabian Rabensteiner (2nd last year) and Samuele Porro. In the girls’ category, Margot Moschetti, winner last weekend in Italy of the difficult Transvésubienne, should be at the sharp end of the order. Fifth last year (5th) and 19th of the most recent World Championships, Estelle Morel will be at her side on the start line with the 2012 Olympic champion Julie Bresset, winner of the Roc d’Azur 2015. Also, to be kept a close eye on is Italy’s Constanza Fazolis (3rd in the marathon last year), her compatriots Martina Berta and Claudia Peretti (world n°6 marathon runner), and Switzerland’s Janina Wüst (world n°4).

Loana Lecomte, Renaud Lavillenie, Emilien Jacquelin in the Estérel

For the first time in its history, the Roc d’Azur is offering new itineraries in the splendid Estérel range with three hikes of 21.9 km, 28.6 km and 45.1 km, starting from the village of Cap Estérel in Agay Saint-Raphaël. Participants can choose their distance along the way, depending on their desire and form. Among them is biathlon champion Emilien Jacquelin, a talented cyclist (he took part in the Tour de France stage in July between Briançon and Alpe d’Huez).

Gravel enthusiasts are too welcome to take in the Estérel scenery thanks to the Canyon Rando Roc Gravel Estérel. And it is difficult to imagine better ambassadors than Loana Lecomte, French and European champion this summer, winner of the general classification of the 2021 World Cup and Renaud Lavillenie, 2012 Olympic champion and former pole vault record holder, who is a mountain bike enthusiast and who will take part in one event each day until Sunday (Canyon Rando Roc Gravel Estérel, Friday; Shimano Rando Roc Electrique Noire, Saturday; Roc d’Azur, Sunday).

The day will conclude with the traditional Roc Ruelles Fréjus and its ultra-spectacular format in the streets of old Fréjus at the foot of the cathedral.
