AN EARLY RETURN TO THE EMPTY QUARTER

Key points

·        Six weeks after the Dakar wound to a close, the W2RC is back with the Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge (ADDC), scheduled for 26 February to 3 March. The second round will bring the field to a familiar landscape —the dunes of the Empty Quarter, this time on the other side of the Saudi border, in Abu Dhabi.

·        In the car category, the ADDC will set up a rematch between Nasser Al Attiyah (Toyota Gazoo Racing) and his runner-up, Sébastien Loeb (Bahrain Raid Xtreme). Once again, the top drivers of the 2022 season are virtually tied after the inaugural round, with the difference that the Frenchman now leads the Qatari by 87 points to 85.

·        In the motorbike category, the reigning world champion, Sam Sunderland (Red Bull GasGas Factory Racing), is returning to competition after crashing out of the Dakar. The three-time winner of the ADDC will almost be racing in his backyard in his duel with the provisional leader, Kevin Benavides (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing).

·        55 vehicles —30 FIA and 25 FIM— are slated to take the start of the second leg of the W2RC in 10 days.

CARS: GAME ON BETWEEN AL ATTIYAH AND LOEB

This was the second Dakar in a row that Nasser Al Attiyah built up an unassailable lead during the first week and simply cruised to the win in the second half of the race. However, this time round, Sébastien Loeb scored more championship points than this rival as he rocketed up the standings to second place overall, picking up a record-breaking six consecutive specials in the process. At the same juncture of 2022, Loeb stood a single point behind the leader, whereas now he is two points ahead. A cut below the King Kong and Godzilla of the W2RC, Guerlain Chicherit (GCK Motorsport), a newcomer to the season-long event, sits in third place with 49 points at the wheel of his Prodrive Hunter. Yazeed Al Rajhi (Overdrive Racing), third in the championship last year, is uncharacteristically off the pace in tenth place, with just 19 points to his name. The Saudi stopped during a stage of the Dakar to give his suspension to one of his teammates, putting his team’s interests ahead of his own position in the championship. Al Rajhi is banking on the ADDC to jockey back into contention for the championship. Toyota is also fielding the Argentinian Juan Cruz Yacopini (Overdrive Racing), as well as Magdalena Zając and her experienced co-driver, Jacek Czachor (Proxcars TME Rally Team). Two X-raid Mini JCWs stand ready to take the fight to the four Hiluxes and two Hunters with Sebastián Halpern and Denis Krotov, driving the Germans’ all-new T1+, unveiled only last January. As in the Dakar, there will be two pairs of vehicles representing China, with Han Wei and Tian Po (Hanwei Motorsport) and Guoyu Zhang and Yunliang Zi (BAIC ORV). In contrast, Martin Prokop will be venturing out all on his own, but this did not stop him from finishing second overall in last year’s ADDC, already at the wheel of his Ford Raptor.

There are a total of 13 entrants on the T1 start list.

T3/T4: LIGHTWEIGHT PROTOTYPES WITH SURPRISES IN STORE

“Chaleco” López and Cristina Gutiérrez placed their T3s in first and second place of the W2RC ranking in the 2022 ADDC, ahead of two T1s. As it happens, a star crew from the T1 category will be sporting number 300, the first of the lightweight prototype race. Mattias Ekström and Emil Bergkvist, who raced for Audi in the Dakar, will be entering this category with the South Racing Can-Am Team. The former Overdrive Racing driver Erik van Loon, who has turned the page on his T1+ career, will be competing for the same team alongside his usual co-driver, Sébastien Delaunay. This strategic category switch could pay dividends in the driver and co-driver standings after the second round. Yasir Seaidan, in his element in the dunes of the ADDC, will be the third piece in South Racing Can-Am’s three-pronged attack. These three top-tier freelancers will come up against Red Bull Off-Road Junior Team USA, spearheaded by the Dakar champion, Austin Jones, Seth Quintero and Mitch Guthrie Jr., along with their Red Bull Can-Am Factory ally Cristina Gutiérrez. João Ferreira and Annett Fischer will be representing the new X-raid / Yamaha clan. Two Frenchmen, Claude Fournier (Can-Am) and Jean-Luc Ceccaldi (PH-Sport Zéphyr) are ready to crash the party. Finally, two female drivers are worth keeping an eye on: the Saudi Dania Akeel and the youngster Aliyyah Koloc.

Meanwhile, the T4 race looks set to be a clash of generations. The reigning world champion Rokas Baciuška (Red Bull Can-Am Factory) and the rising star Pau Navarro (FN Speed) will be up against Polaris’s grizzled veterans, Michèle Cinotto and Shinsuke Umeda. These two regular fixtures of the category will have cutting-edge technology at their disposal in the shape of Xtremeplus’s new RZR Pro R cars.

MOTORBIKES/QUADS: THE RETURN OF THE KING

After crashing out of the race within the first three days of the Dakar, Sam Sunderland and Ricky Brabec (Monster Energy Honda), first and second in the 2022 season, are back in the mix with zero points in the bag. They are in for a real challenge, but is worth noting that Adrien Van Beveren managed to finish third overall last year, just one point shy of second place, after going home empty-handed from the Dakar. The championship remains wide open with four legs to go! “Sundersam“, a long-time Emirati resident with three ADDC wins under his belt, is still likely to mount a successful title defence. With Daniel Sanders again on the sidelines due to injury, GasGas is putting all its eggs in the Brit’s basket. The 2022 runner-up, Ricky Brabec, will fight to catch up with the other works bikers, including his three stablemates at Monster Energy Honda, Adrien Van Beveren, “Nacho” Cornejo and Pablo Quintanilla. Red Bull KTM Factory Racing will find strength in numbers, with the Dakar champion, Kevin Benavides, his runner-up, Toby Price, and Matthias Walkner. Skyler Howes (third in the Dakar) and Luciano Benavides will be flying the flag for Husqvarna Factory Racing. Hero MotoSports will be fielding two of its four factory bikers, namely, Ross Branch and Sebastian Bühler. The 2022 Rally2 World Cup champion, Mason Klein (BAS World KTM Racing), who has made his RallyGP debut this season, brings the total for this category to 13 bikers.

In the Rally2 category, Romain Dumontier (HT Rally Raid Husqvarna Racing), who has led the championship since the end of the Dakar, is taking a gamble by not starting the ADDC. The rules for this learning category allow bikers to scrap one of their results from the championship tally, and the Frenchman has chosen to exercise this option for the second leg, giving a clear run to direct rivals such as Paolo Lucci (BAS World KTM Racing), Michael Docherty (SRG Motorsports), Jean-Loup Lepan and Konrad Dąbrowski from Duust Diverse Racing and Toni Mulec (BAS World KTM Racing). The Romanians Ionuț Florea and Andrei Cristian Danila bring the Rally2 total to 7 bikers in their W2RC debut.

In the quad category, the local hero and two-time defending champion, Abdulaziz Ahli, is the big favourite, just like Sunderland, who he followed in crashing out of the Dakar earlier this year. The Emirati faces a formidable Lithuanian armada. Laisvydas Kancius (AG Dakar School), his closest rival for the championship in the ADDC, will be escorted by Adomas Gancierus and Antonas Kanopkinas. Rodolfo Guillioli, who lit up the inaugural W2RC season, will be flying in from Guatemala to take the total to 5 riders.

“This year’s ADDC will be the most challenging yet as the EMSO raises the stakes. The competitors will have an even longer route to tackle, taking on 237 kilometres more than in 2022 for an intimidating total of 2,170 kilometres.”

Schedule

·        The usual administrative and technical scrutineering will take place at the Energy Business Center in Abu Dhabi from 7 am to 4 pm on 25 February. The pre-race press conference will be held at the Murban Theatre at 7 pm.

·        On 26 February, the caravan will transfer to the desert in Al Dhannah, where the prologue will start at 3:15 pm.

·        On 27 February, the opening stage will connect the bivouac in Al Dhannah to the race HQ at the Qasr Al Sarab Desert Resort.

·        On 28 February and 1 and 2 March, three loop stages will be held in the Al Dhafra Region, in the Rub’ al Khali (Empty Quarter).

·        On 3 March, the closing stage will take the field to Abu Dhabi, where the race will come to an end at the Energy Business Center around 12:30 pm. The prize ceremony will take place there at 7 pm.

DE VUELTA EN EL EMPTY QUARTER

Puntos a recordar:

·        Seis semanas después del final del Dakar, el W2RC continua del 26 de febrero al 3 de marzo con el Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge (ADDC). Esta segunda ronda sigue los pasos de la anterior, con el regreso de los pilotos en las dunas del Empty Quarter, esta vez del otro lado de la frontera saudí, en Abu Dhabi.

·        En coches, el ADDC dará lugar a una revancha entre Nasser Al Attiyah (Toyota Gazoo Racing) y el subcampeón Sébastien Loeb (Bahrain Raid Xtreme). El número 1 y el número 2 de la temporada 2022 siguen luchando. Pero esta vez, el francés queda por delante del qatarí, con 87 puntos frente a 85.

·        En motos, vuelve el campeón del mundo 2022 Sam Sunderland (Red Bull GasGas Factory Racing) tras su retirada del Dakar. Siendo tres veces ganador del ADDC, correrá como si estuviera en su casa contra el líder de la clasificación provisional Kevin Benavides (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing).

·        Con 30 inscritos en la competición de la FIA y 25 en la competición de la FIM, se espera una caravana de 55 vehículos dentro de 10 días, en la segunda ronda del W2RC.

COCHES: AL ATTIYAH-LOEB, EL CLÁSICO

Ya van dos Dakar que Nasser Al Attiyah toma el liderato de la carrera en la primera semana, antes de gestionar la segunda parte e imponerse. Pero este año, en su ascenso hacia el segundo puesto de la clasificación general, Sébastien Loeb ha sumado más puntos que su rival en el campeonato, mientras lograba una serie récord de seis victorias de etapa consecutivas. En 2022, en la misma época, Loeb estaba a un punto por detrás de Al Attiyah… y ahora está a dos puntos por delante. Detrás de los dos mejores pilotos del W2RC se encuentra Guerlain Chicherit (GCK Motorsport), tercero con 49 puntos con su Hunter de Prodrive. Yazeed Al Rajhi (Overdrive Racing), tercero de la temporada pasada, ocupa actualmente un inusual décimo puesto con 19 puntos. El saudí se detuvo en el Dakar para ofrecer una suspensión a un compañero de equipo, eligiendo favorecer los intereses de su equipo antes de los suyos en el campeonato. Al Rajhi quiere brillar en el ADDC para remontar en el campeonato. Tendremos también en Toyota al argentino Jan Cruz Yacopini (Overdrive Racing) y a la piloto Magdalena Zajac, acompañada del experimentado Jacek Czachor (Proxcars TME Rally Team). Frente a los cuatro Hilux y los dos Hunter, dos X-raid Mini JCW volverán más fuertes con Sebastian Halpern y Denis Krotov, equipados del nuevo T1+ alemán que apareció el pasado mes de enero. Como en el Dakar, China también tendrá representación con dos parejas de vehículos. Los de Hanwei Motorsport pilotados por Han Wei y Tian Po, y los de BAIC ORV pilotados por Guoyu Zhang y Yunliang Zi. Martin Prokop no podrá contar con el apoyo de ningún compañero, lo que no le impidió terminar segundo del ADDC el año pasado, ya con su Ford Raptor.

Habrán en total 13 pilotos en la categoría T1.

T3/T4: SORPRESAS EN LOS PROTOTIPOS LIGEROS

“Chaleco” López y Cristina Guttierez, pilotos en la categoría T3, terminaron primero y segundo en la clasificación W2RC del ADDC 2022, por delante de dos T1. Y es precisamente un antiguo equipo estrella de los T1 que llevará el número 300, el primero en la lista de los Prototipos Ligeros. Mattias Ekström y Emil Bergkvist, que estuvieron con Audi en el Dakar, participarán en esta categoría, con el equipo South Racing Can-Am. El antiguo piloto de Overdrive Racing, Erik Van Loon, que ha puesto fin a su carrera en T1+, estará en el mismo equipo con su copiloto habitual Sébastien Delaunay. Un cambio estratégico de categoría que podría dar sus frutos en la clasificación de pilotos y copilotos al final de la segunda ronda. Yasir Seaidan, muy experimentado en las dunas del ADDC, será el tercer piloto de South Racing Can-Am. Frente a estos tres participantes de lujo, encontraremos a los equipos del Red Bull Off-Road Junior Team USA liderados por el ganador del Dakar Austin Jones, Seth Quintero y Mitch Guthrie Jr, acompañados por Cristina Gutiérrez (Red Bull Can-Am Factory). El nuevo clan X-raid / Yamaha estará representado por Joao Ferreira y Annett Fischer. Los franceses Claude Fournier en el Can-Am y Jean-Luc Ceccaldi en el PH-Sport Zephyr intentarán estar en la batalla. Por último, dos pilotos femeninas estarán especialmente en la mira: la saudí Dania Akeel y la jovencísima Aliyyah Koloc.

En T4, la generación joven se enfrentará a la vieja escuela. El campeón del mundo Rokas Baciuska (Red Bull Can-Am Factory) y el cada vez más fuerte Pau Navarro (FN Speed) se enfrentarán a la experiencia de los pilotos de Polaris Michèle Cinotto y Shinsuke Umeda. Dos grandes nombres de la categoría que estarán técnicamente bien equipados, ya que pilotarán los nuevos RZR Pro R del equipo Xtremeplus.

MOTOS/QUADS: SUNDERLAND ESTÁ DE VUELTA

Sam Sunderland y Ricky Brabec (Monster Energy Honda), el primero y el segundo de la temporada 2022, vuelven a competir tras caerse en las tres primeras etapas del Dakar, donde no han sumado ningún punto. Volver en la batalla será difícil, pero recordemos que el año pasado, Adrien Van Beveren consiguió remontar hasta el tercer puesto de la clasificación final, a un punto del segundo, después de haberse perdido una carrera. Todo es posible a falta de cuatro rondas. Y con tres victorias en el ADDC, “Sundersam“, que vivió mucho tiempo en los Emiratos Árabes Unidos, sigue siendo el favorito para conservar la corona. Con la ausencia de Daniel Sanders, convaleciente, el británico será el único representante de GasGas. Ricky Brabec, segundo en 2022, intentará estar a la altura del resto de los pilotos oficiales, entre ellos sus tres compañeros en el equipo Monster Energy Honda: Adrien Van Beveren, “Nacho” Cornejo y Pablo Quintanilla. Viene también para luchar toda la estructura Red Bull KTM Factory Racing, compuesta por el recién ganador del Dakar Kevin Benavides, el subcampeón Toby Price y Matthias Walkner. En Husqvarna Factory Racing, tendrán a Skyler Howes (tercero en el Dakar) y Luciano Benavides. En Hero Motorsports, se anuncia la presencia de dos de los cuatro oficiales, Ross Branch y Sebastian Bühler. Con Mason Klein (BAS World KTM Racing), vencedor de la Copa del Mundo Rally2 2022 y novato en RallyGP esta temporada, habrán 13 pilotos en esta categoría.

En Rally2, Romain Dumontier (HT Rally Raid Husqvarna Racing), líder tras el Dakar, no participará en el ADDC. El francés eligió la segunda ronda del mundial como “X-1”: el reglamento específico de esta categoría de aprendizaje ofrece la posibilidad de retirar un resultado al final del campeonato para establecer la clasificación final. Deja así el camino libre a sus rivales directos Paolo Lucci (BAS World KTM Racing), Michael Docherty (SRG Motorsports), Jean-Loup Lepan y Konrad Dabrowski de Duust Diverse Racing, y Toni Mulec (BAS World KTM Racing). Los rumanos Ionut Florea y Andrei Cristian Danila harán su debut en el W2RC, lo que dará un total de 7 participantes en Rally2.

En quads, el piloto local y bicampeón Abdulaziz Ahli es el favorito, después de haber tenido la misma mala suerte que Sunderland en el Dakar. Frente al emiratí estará una auténtica delegación lituana. La programación

·        El 25 de febrero, de las 7.00 a las 16.00 horas, tendrán lugar las verificaciones administrativas y técnicas en el Energy Business Center de Abu Dhabi. La conferencia de prensa previa a la carrera se celebrará en el Murban Theatre a las 19.00 horas.

·        El 26 de febrero, la caravana se trasladará al desierto de Al Dhannah, donde empezará el prólogo a las 15.15 horas.

·        El 27 de febrero, la primera etapa irá del vivac de Al Dhannah al cuartel general de la carrera en el Qasr Al Sarab Desert Resort.

·        Los días 28 de febrero, 1 y 2 de marzo tendrán lugar 3 etapas en el corazón de la región de Al Dhafra, en el Rhub al Khali (Empty Quarter).

·        El 3 de marzo, la última etapa llevará a los competidores de vuelta a la ciudad de Abu Dhabi, donde se celebrará la llegada en el Energy Business Center hacia las 12.30 horas. La ceremonia de entrega de premios tendrá lugar a las 19.00 horas.
