Key points:

• The W2RC caravan will resume its American expedition in a month. Following the Sonora Rally in Mexico in late April, the fourth round of the championship will take place in Argentina from 26 August to 1 September with the eleventh Desafío Ruta 40 YPF.
• This edition is a first for the W2RC, which has never visited Argentina before, and marks the return of the Desafío Ruta 40 YPF following a hiatus that started in 2018. The competitors will face a gruelling 2,804 km route between La Rioja, Belén (Catamarca) and Salta, split into a prologue and five stages.
• FIA overall leader Nasser Al Attiyah (Toyota Gazoo Racing) is ready to take on the local hero Sebastián Halpern (X-raid Mini JCW). The Argentinian, fourth in the standings, has won the race twice and is lining up as the defending champion.
• Toby Price (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing), perched at the top of the FIM leader board, will have to keep an eye on his teammate Kevin Benavides, currently in fourth place. The Argentinian ace, who defeated the Australian to win his second Dakar last January, also has two victories to his name in this event.

THE ARGENTINIAN REMONTADA

The 2023 W2RC added two new American races to the calendar, slotted between the Dakar and the Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge and its traditional season finale in Morocco in October. After the Sonora Rally in Mexico, the Desafío Ruta 40 YPF is now poised to bring Argentina back to the forefront of the international rally raid scene. The country hosted the Dakar ten times in a row from 2009 to 2018, when it awed the world with its sublime landscapes and a tidal wave of enthusiasm swept the nation. The Desafío Ruta 40 also ran for ten editions between 2010 and 2018, including two in 2017 (one in the north and one in the south). After five years on ice, the DR40 —as it is known in the trade— chose 2023 as the right moment to emulate the World Cup-winning national football team and stage its own remontada!

Argentina is keen on taking a leaf out of the book of its homegrown talent, which has consistently been at the business end of the sport in recent years. Sebastián Halpern is fourth in the car championship, with another albiceleste, the rising star Juan Cruz Yacopini (Overdrive Racing), nipping on his heels. The Mini JCW driver, a two-time winner of the DR40 (2016 and 2018), is the current title holder. He has a real shot at joining Nasser Al Attiyah and Yazeed Al Rajhi (Toyota Overdrive) on the provisional podium. Meanwhile, in the motorbike category, Kevin Benavides claimed his second Dakar last January, following his maiden win in 2021. He lies fourth in the championship, hamstrung by a crash shortly before the second round. Also a two-time winner of the race (2016 and 2017), he is the favourite to win on home turf, but few RallyGP riders have improved their performances this year as much as his brother Luciano (Husqvarna Factory Racing). The younger Benavides is now second in the championship and certainly has what it takes to add a third Desafío Ruta 40 YPF trophy to the family’s silverware.

A DAUNTING CHALLENGE

The Desafío Ruta 40 owes its name to Ruta Nacional 40, which it has traditionally followed. RN40 is the longest and most important road in Argentina, running parallel to the Andes from south to north for over 5,000 kilometres. Ruta 40 is famous for the mosaic of beautiful reserves, national parks and permanently snow-capped peaks —including the highest in the Americas— that lie along the route. It has set the stage for adventures such as “Che” Guevara’s journey of self-discovery. The DR40 will bring all these landscapes to our screens, just like the Dakar once did. The eleventh Desafío Ruta 40 will take place in the northern reaches of the country. Here, the organiser warns that the main challenges will be the varied terrain and the need to change the pace throughout the rally and often within the same stage. Off-track sections, dried-up riverbeds —the famous ríos, including the Pie de Medano río at an altitude of 2,900 metres—, dunes of all sizes —including the dunes of Fiambalá, which make up 30% of the stage 4 special— , salt flats… Dakar aficionados in South America are in for a real treat, not just because the race will revisit some of the venues and bivouacs that went down in the ten-year history of the Dakar on the continent, but also and especially because it is bringing back the atmosphere that fans came to know and love. “You have no idea how many questions about the spectator areas we have received!“, confesses the DR40 YPF Communications Department.

La Rioja, Catamarca (where is located Belén) and Salta are three provinces that have hosted the DR40 and the Dakar more than once. Far from resting on the laurels, they are serving up between 10 and 15% of entirely new content. The prologue, held in La Rioja on 27 August, will give fans an idea of the state of play. Stage 1 will take the field to Belén, where the caravan will set up camp in the familiar bivouac of the Dakar and previous editions of the DR40. This picture-postcard village will then host three loop stages. The fifth and final stage will set course for Salta, located almost 500 kilometres from the start city down Ruta 40.

We are designing a race for the riders to have a good time, but be careful! That doesn’t mean it will be an easy race. It will be a great Desafío Ruta 40.”

Puntos a recordar:

• Dentro de un mes, la caravana del W2RC continuará su gira americana. Tras el Sonora Rally en México a finales de abril, la cuarta cita del campeonato tendrá lugar del 26 de agosto al 1 de septiembre en Argentina, celebrando la 11ª edición del Desafío Ruta 40 YPF.
• Será la primera visita del W2RC en Argentina desde su creación. El Desafío Ruta 40 YPF hará su gran regreso tras su última edición en 2018. Los competidores se enfrentarán a 2.804 km entre La Rioja, Belén (Catamarca) y Salta, repartidos en 5 etapas precedidas por un prólogo.
• Nasser Al Attiyah (Toyota Gazoo Racing), líder de la clasificación general FIA, se prepara para desafiar a Sebastián Halpern (X-raid Mini JCW) en su país. 4º en la clasificación, el argentino es el último ganador de la carrera, que dominó dos veces.
• Toby Price (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing), actual líder de la clasificación FIM, deberá vigilar a su compañero de equipo Kevin Benavides, 4º del campeonato. La estrella argentina, que se llevó su segundo Dakar por delante del australiano en enero de 2023, ganó su carrera nacional dos veces.

LA REMONTADA DE ARGENTINA

Tras el Dakar y el Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge, el calendario 2023 del W2RC viaja a dos nuevas carreras americanas antes de su tradicional final en Marruecos el próximo mes de octubre. Después del Sonora Rally en México, el Desafío Ruta 40 YPF volverá a situar a Argentina en el centro del mundo del rally-raid. De 2009 a 2018, el país recibió diez veces seguidas al Dakar, revelando terrenos de juego excepcionales y un inmenso fervor popular. De 2010 a 2018, también se disputaron diez ediciones del Desafío Ruta 40 (en 2017 se celebraron dos carreras, una en el norte y otra en el sur). Pospuesto durante los últimos cinco años, el DR40 -así suele llamarse- decidió que era hora de seguir el ejemplo de su selección nacional de fútbol, campeona del mundo, ¡y hacer su remontada en 2023!

Y Argentina quiere seguir los pasos de sus pilotos nacionales, que se han mantenido en la vanguardia de este deporte en los últimos años. En coches, Sebastián Halpern se encuentra actualmente cuarto en el campeonato, justo por delante de su compatriota y joven promesa Juan Cruz Yacopini (Overdrive Racing). El piloto al volante del Mini JCW ha ganado dos veces el DR40 (2016 y 2018), por lo que tiene una corona que defender. Unirse a Nasser Al Attiyah y Yazeed Al Rajhi (Toyota Overdrive) en el podio del campeonato al final de “su” carrera está a su alcance. En motos, Kevin Benavides consiguió su segunda victoria en el Dakar el pasado mes de enero, tras el éxito de 2021. Se encuentra cuarto en la clasificación provisional del mundial, teniendo en cuenta que una caída antes del Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge lo ha frenado en su campeonato. Dos veces ganador de la carrera (2016 y 2017), es uno de los favoritos en sus tierras. Su hermano Luciano (Husqvarna Factory Racing) es uno de los pilotos de la categoría RallyGP que más ha progresado esta temporada. El menor de los Benavides queda actualmente segundo en el campeonato del mundo y podría inscribir su apellido por tercera vez en el palmarés del Desafío Ruta 40.

UN GRAN RETO

El Desafío Ruta 40 se llama así en referencia a la Ruta Nacional 40, que tradicionalmente sigue la misma dirección. La RN40 es la carretera más importante y larga de Argentina, que cruza desde el sur hasta el norte más de 5.000 km a lo largo de los Andes. La Ruta 40 es famosa por la belleza y diversidad de las reservas, los parques nacionales y los picos, eternamente nevados y los más altos de América, que atraviesa. Es tierra de aventuras, incluidas las de Ernesto “Che” Guevara. Unos paisajes revelados por el DR40 y el Dakar que resurgirán en nuestras pantallas durante la semana de la carrera. La 11ª edición del Desafío Ruta 40 YPF tendrá lugar en el norte del país. El mayor reto anunciado por la organización será la versatilidad del terreno y la adaptación a los cambios de ritmo a lo largo del rally, a veces en el mismo día. Fuera de pista, cauces secos – los famosos ríos – entre ellos el del Pie de Médano a 2.900 metros de altitud, dunas de diferentes tamaños – entre ellas las de Fiambalá, que representarán el 30% de la cuarta especial -, salares… Los aficionados del Dakar en Sudamérica van a estar felices. No sólo porque encontrarán algunos de los terrenos y vivacs que constituyeron las grandes horas de la década sudamericana de la carrera, sino porque podrán reencontrarse con el fabuloso ambiente creado por el público. “No se pueden imaginar la cantidad de peticiones que recibimos para las zonas para espectadores”, afirma el departamento de comunicación del DR40 YPF.

La Rioja, Catamarca (donde está Belén) y Salta son tres provincias que han visto el DR40 y el Dakar en varias ocasiones. Unos valores seguros para el deporte, con especiales que ofrecerán entre un 10 y un 15% de novedad absoluta. El prólogo en La Rioja, el 27 de agosto, debería tomar la temperatura del público. La etapa 1 será una línea recta hasta Belén, donde la caravana acampará en el vivac conocido del Dakar y de ediciones anteriores del DR40. Las tres etapas siguientes serán en bucle alrededor de este pueblo pintoresco. La 5ª y última etapa será en línea y llevará a los competidores hasta Salta, a casi 500 kilómetros al norte de la ciudad de salida.
