ON TRACK
Leading the overall since he won stage 3, Toby Price maintained his advantage right up to the finish today at the foot of the Merzouga dunes. The Australian takes his first win of the season and his third Rallye du Maroc crown after those of 2016 and 2018. Luciano Benavides, finished 2nd and in doing so wins his duel with Price to the triumph in W2RC for the first time in his career. Winner of the day, Pablo Quintanilla (Monster Energy Honda) finishes 3rd in the race. In Rally2, Bradley Cox won in Morocco, where he had made his debut on the international circuit in 2021. It was the South African’s second W2RC win of the season, following his victory on the Désafío Ruta 40. Romain Dumontier (HT Rally Raid Husqvarna Racing) finished 2nd ahead of Paulo Lucci (BAS World KTM Racing) and wins the Rally2 world cup. In the Rally3 Enduro Cup Afriquia, the Africa Rallye Team dominated the week with Cheikh-Yves Jacquemain and Souleymane Addahri each winning two stages. The Senegalese rider is the overall winner of this year’s event, ahead of Hungary’s Richard Hodola and the Moroccan. In the quad category, Alexandre Giroud, a two-time Dakar winner, took the win, the duel with Manuel Andujar coming to an abrupt end after the Argentinean broke his engine on the penultimate stage. Juraj Varga (Varga Motorsport) and Rodolfo Guillioli complete the podium.
Yazeed Al Rajhi had zero problems with his Hilux this week and didn’t make any mistakes. Once again the Saudi driver was both fast and consistent throughout the race, while his rivals dropped out of the running over the five stages. Nasser Al Attiyah (Toyota Gazoo Racing), overall leader for the first three stages, Carlos Sainz and Stéphane Peterhansel (Audi Sport) all suffered mechanical problems. Sébastien Loeb (BRX) and title holder Guerlain Chicherit (Overdrive Racing) damaged their cars. In the end, Al Rajhi won the Rallye du Maroc for the first time in his career after finishing second in 2021 and third in 2016. His team-mate Dennis Krotov took 2nd place while ‘Nani’ Roma (M-Sport NWM Ford) finished on the podium at the wheel of the new Ranger (see Stat of the Day). By winning the 24th Rallye du Maroc, Al Rajhi secured his second victory of the season after the Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge and takes the W2RC runner-up spot behind Al Attiyah and ahead of Yacopini (Overdrive Racing). In the T3 category, the arrival of the three Goczals, who transferred from the T4 category to BBR team Taurus cars, did not go unnoticed. Eryk won the prologue and stage 1 before his father and uncle led each stage. In the end, Marek Goczal won ahead of Seth Quintero (Red Bull Off-Road Jr Team USA by BFG) and Cristina Guttierez (Red Bull Can-Am Factory). In T4, Joao Ferreira, from T3, and Sara Price, from the American off-road scene, livened up proceedings. The two South Racing Can-Am team-mates each won two stages. At the finishers’ arch, it was the Portuguese driver who came out on top. A duel which certainly foreshadows the one we will see next January.

Surprising as it may seem, David Castera has never before produced an entire rally-raid road book! While he has always plotted it out, in the past circumstances have meant he has delegated the drawing of all or part of it to specialists. The one used on this 6th edition however is 100% all his own work. The principle motivation was to instil a new philosophy: less precision to give more importance to the interpretation of the road book. A return to a more ‘old school’ style of navigation where intuition and analysis by the rider or the co-driver takes on more importance. At the end of today’s stage, where he welcomed each finisher, the race boss was satisfied… as were the competitors: “This was my first time, I’ve never done a road book in its entirety before. I rarely have the time to do it myself on the track. I’m happy because I was able to put my own stamp on it, even if there are some things that need fine-tuning. Overall, it was a great race. Aside from the road book, we need to work on the course to create difficulties at the right moment, to know how to put on and take off the pressure. I’m satisfied but it’s the competitors that counts. If they’re happy, I’m happy. I goal is, above all, to please them.”
STAT OF THE DAY: 7395
That’s the total number of kilometres that the new Ford Ranger has covered in Morocco this year, including the 1169 kilometres the car has done on this 24th Rallye du Maroc. Including the Spanish Baja and tests in different countries including France, Dubai and South Africa that figure increases to over 13,000 kilometres. So, why much time in Morocco? According to M-Sport NWM Ford team manager Matthew Wilson the country has several advantages. You can transport your team and equipment from Europe with relative ease, you’re never too far from a workshop and above all the country offers a huge variety of terrain, featuring pretty much all the conditions you might encounter on a rally raid, whatever the continent. Added their driver, the hugely experienced ‘Nani’ Roma: “However much testing you do, it is never enough. Plus, there’s no substitute for racing kilometres, but we’ve actually broken very little. I think we’re as ready as we’ll ever be for Saudi Arabia in January.”

Al mando de la clasificación general desde la etapa 3 que ganó, Toby Price mantuvo su ventaja hasta la meta de hoy al pie de las dunas de Merzouga. El australiano se lleva su primera victoria de la temporada y su tercera en el Rallye du Maroc tras sus éxitos en 2016 y 2018. Luciano Benavides, en el podio general desde ayer gracias a su victoria en la cuarta etapa, ha subido hoy un nuevo escalón. El argentino acabó 2º del rally, al igual que el año pasado. Gracias a esta posición, ganó su duelo con Price por el título W2RC. Luciano Benavides es campeón del mundo por primera vez en su carrera. El ganador del día, Pablo Quintanilla (Monster Energy Honda) terminó tercero en la carrera.
En Rally2, Bradley Cox gana en Marruecos, donde debutó en el circuito internacional en 2021. Esta es la segunda victoria de la temporada del sudafricano en W2RC después de la del Desafío Ruta 40. Romain Dumontier (HT Rally Raid Husqvarna Racing) termina 2º en carrera por delante de Paolo Lucci (BAS World KTM Racing). El francés gana el campeonato de Rally2. En la Rally3 Enduro Cup Afriquia, la promoción del Africa Rallye Team dominó la semana. Cheikh-Yves Jacquemain y Souleymane Addahri ganaron dos etapas cada uno. El senegalés es el gran vencedor de esta edición por delante del húngaro Richard Hodola y del marroquí. Dos pilotos del continente africano suben al podio final, ¡un gran ARTE! En quads, se impone Alexandre Giroud, doble ganador del Dakar. El duelo con Manuel Andújar llegó a su fin después de un problema en el motor del argentino en la penúltima especial. Esta semana, Yazeed Al Rajhi no se ha visto retrasado por las partes mecánicas de su Hilux y no ha cometido ningún error de pilotaje. Algo habitual para el saudí, siempre regular y consistente, al frente durante toda la carrera. Su punto fuerte hoy da sus frutos ante los reveses de sus adversarios directos, autoeliminados en cinco etapas. Nasser Al Attiyah (Toyota Gazoo Racing), líder de la tabla general durante las tres primeras etapas, Carlos Sainz y Stéphane Peterhansel (Audi Sport), los tres, sufrieron incidentes mecánicos. Sébastien Loeb (BRX) y el campeón del Rallye du Maroc 2022, Guerlain Chicherit (Overdrive Racing), dañaron sus autos. Al final, Al Rajhi ganó aquí por primera vez en su carrera después de su segundo puesto en 2021 y su tercer puesto en 2016. Su compañero de equipo Dennis Krotov obtuvo el segundo lugar y “Nani” Roma (M-Sport NWM Ford) el tercero en su primera aparición en un rally raid al volante del nuevo Ranger (ver Cifra del día).

En T4, Joao Ferreira, llegado de la T3, y Sara Price, llegada del todoterreno americano, animaron la carrera. Los dos compañeros de equipo de South Racing Can-Am ganaron dos etapas cada uno. Son los portugueses quienes ganan frente a la piloto femenina. Un duelo que sin duda presagia el que deberíamos ver el próximo mes de enero con el inicio de temporada. En T5, Michiel Becx ganó por delante de Gerrit Zuurmond (Stichting Rainbow Truck) y Tomas Vratny (Fesh Fesh).
RADIO VIVAC
Puede sorprender, ¡pero David Castera nunca había hecho un road book entero de rally raid! Pero debido a ciertas circunstancias, David, quien estaba acostumbrado a trazar pero delegar el diseño del road book a especialistas o, en el mejor de los casos, realizar unas partes, lo hizo todo para esta edición, la sexta en la era de ODC Events. El arquitecto de la 24ª edición de la carrera ha querido inculcar una nueva filosofía: menos precisión para dar más importancia a la interpretación del road-book, para volver a una navegación más “de la vieja escuela” donde la intuición y el análisis del motociclista o el copiloto del coche tiene más importancia. En la meta, donde daba la bienvenida a cada competidor, el jefe de carrera se mostró satisfecho… ya que los competidores lo estaban: “Era mi primera vez, nunca había creado un road book entero. No tengo mucho tiempo como para hacerlo yo mismo en la pista. Estoy feliz porque pude poner mi toque, aunque hay cosas que perfeccionar. En general, hicimos una buena carrera. Más allá del road book, hay que trabajar en el recorrido para traer dificultades en los momentos adecuados, sabiendo poner y soltar presión donde sea necesario. Estoy muy contento y de todos modos el juez es el placer de los competidores. Cuando ellos están felices, yo soy feliz. Trabajo para complacerlos.”
CIFRA DEL DÍA: 7395
Esta tarde, el nuevo Ford Ranger que debutó esta semana en rally raid tiene en su cuentakilómetros 7.395 kilómetros recorridos en Marruecos, incluidos los 1.169 kilómetros recorridos durante el 24º Rallye du Maroc. Si sumamos la Baja española y las pruebas realizadas en diferentes países, entre ellos Francia, Dubai y Sudáfrica, esta cifra se eleva a más de 13.000 kilómetros. Entonces, ¿por qué pasa tanto tiempo en Marruecos? Según Matthew Wilson, director del equipo M-Sport NWM Ford, el país tiene varias ventajas. Puedes transportar tu equipo y tu equipamiento desde Europa con relativa facilidad, nunca estarás lejos de un taller y, lo mejor de todo, el país ofrece una amplia variedad de terrenos, con prácticamente todas las condiciones que puedas encontrar en un rally raid, sea cual sea el continente. Su piloto, el experimentado “Nani” Roma, añade: “Por mucho que lo intentemos, nunca es suficiente. Además, no hay nada mejor que los kilómetros en carrera, pero en realidad es que rompimos muy poco. Creo que estamos listos para Arabia Saudita en enero.”

Pelear con Toby el último día y abrir pista en las dunas le da un sabor especial a este campeonato. Cuando comencé en este deporte estaba muy lejos del nivel de los mejores, pero aprendí que en el rally raid hay que saber adaptarse y nunca rendirse. No podría estar más feliz de lo que estoy ahora, es un sentimiento increíble.”
Toby Price (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing): ”Dimos todo lo que pudimos para esta carrera, pero para el título W2RC no funcionó. Es difícil de tragar. Muchas cosas no salieron como queríamos, pero así es. Luciano hizo un gran trabajo abriendo hoy. Necesito que mi suerte cambie un poco. Los muchachos del equipo hicieron un gran trabajo con mi moto, no puedo agradecerles lo suficiente.”

El comienzo del año no fue bueno, así que ganar en Argentina y luego aquí es increíble. El duro trabajo está empezando a dar sus frutos. Marek Goczal (BBR): ”Tuvimos muchas aventuras hoy, más que en el resto del rally combinado. Mi copiloto hizo un excelente trabajo y ahorramos tiempo en la navegación. Hemos tenido un pinchazo y algunos problemas más en la etapa, pero hemos llegado a la meta. Ahora pasamos al siguiente objetivo: conseguir que los tres coches del equipo suban al podio del Dakar.”
Joao Ferreira (South Racing Can-Am): ”Era nuestra primera carrera en T4 y conseguimos la victoria. Aprendimos mucho sobre el coche y su excelente preparación para el Dakar. Hoy hubo un poco de estrés porque hubo mucha navegación, pero todavía nos estamos divirtiendo. Ahora nos iremos a Dubai para seguir entrenando.” |
