PARIS, 6 May 2024 – The International Network of Basin Organizations (INBO) will be represented by its member organizations and partners from Africa, Latin America, Asia and Europe at the 10th World Water Forum, which takes place from 18 to 25 May in Bali (Indonesia).
INBO has been very active in preparing and taking part in the key sessions and events at this major event for stakeholders in the field of water and environment on a global scale.

THE POLITICAL SEGMENT DEDICATED TO BASIN MANAGEMENT
|
|
This is why INBO is at the heart of the organisation of an emblematic meeting for dialogue, reflection and exchanges of experience to improve the effectiveness of public policies: THE segment dedicated to basin management*.
Its aim is to engage and mobilise stakeholders to accelerate the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), by and for river basins. On 22 May, round tables on topics such as governance, planning, financing, water information systems and transboundary cooperation will bring together political leaders and representatives from different regions of the world throughout the day.

INBO is launching the “Twin Basin Initiative”, a coordinated programme involving several partners, to implement the principles of the Dakar Action Plan for river, lake and aquifer basins. It aims to promote and gradually develop peer-to-peer exchanges and twinning alliances between basin organisations.
As the first confirmed component of this initiative, a “Peer-to-Peer” support project for river basins has been developed with the support of the European Commission’s Directorate-General for International Partnerships (DG INTPA). The overall aim of this action is to improve the sustainable management of water resources in a context of increasing pressure and climate change, through worldwide exchanges of experience between teams from the basin organisations themselves.

PRESENTING KEY PUBLICATIONS
|
|
New publications will be presented, including a flagship publication: the Transfer of Waste and Plastics in Aquatic Environments Handbook, published in four languages (French, English, Spanish, Chinese) to understand and act on this global challenge. The handbook was written in partnership with the French Waste Partnership (PFD), the International Solid Waste Association (ISWA), the French Development Agency (AFD) and the French Biodiversity Office (OFB). It combines in-depth articles and case studies (Cambodia, Azerbaijan, Guatemala, Côte d’Ivoire, United States, Australia, etc.) and presents tried and tested solutions that can be adapted to different contexts.

On the occasion of the World Water Forum, INBO is collaborating with the International Water Resources Association (IWRA) on the publication of a special issue of the journal Water International dedicated to water resources management in river, lake and aquifer basins.

2023 has been a busy year for INBO, marked by growing recognition of our basin-wide approach to sustainable water resource management.

For 30 years, INBO has been committed to the recognition of the river basin, a key scale for efficient and sustainable integrated management of water resources in order to meet 3 major challenges: adaptation to climate change, preservation of biodiversity and transboundary cooperation. This long-standing commitment was rewarded in 2022 with the inclusion of river basin management in the conclusions of COP 27 and, in 2023, in those of the United Nations Conference on Water.
These achievements are milestones to be built on.

The International Network of Basin Organisations (INBO) was created in 1994 to support initiatives to organise Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) in the catchment areas of national or transboundary rivers, lakes or aquifers. This platform for exchanging knowledge and experience is managed by its President and the Liaison Bureau, who organise the permanent Technical Secretariat provided by the International Office for Water (OiEau). INBO is made up of 192 Member-Organisations and Permanent Observers in nearly 90 countries.
